What's top of mind for strategic managers?

Abstract
Which topics are senior information professionals tackling now and what are the key challenges?
Item
At a recent Community session in London, "State of the industry, 2017", 20 or so senior information professionals and vendors met to discuss the issues most affecting them and their organisation now, as well as those on the horizon.
The discussions were wide-ranging with insights from industries including financial, legal, management consulting and pharmaceutical.
Data analytics
Our Research Focus "Data analytics - ready your information service" resonated with many participants and it was clear that there are still many unanswered questions around selecting data, usage and governance policy.
Adding to the complexity is that there is currently no uniform vendor approach to licensing use of data. The session provided a rare and welcome opportunity for information professionals to have an open discussion with a variety of vendors.
Usage and access management
Measuring usage, providing single sign-on to resources, and authentication continues to prove challenging.
Even deciding what data markers to measure is difficult. Once the data is in, deciding on its reliability is the next challenge. Several attendees reported different usage data depending on the tools used to measure. They also commented that vendors do not all track the same metrics, making comparisons difficult.
Ensuring that reports on usage tell the full narrative around the data is important. It might be that usage reduction means that users are finding relevant material first time or it might be that a single report from a subscription database provides enough value to justify the annual price.
