Insight 2 from Research Focus - why vendor dialogue matters
Jinfo Blog
23rd December 2016
Abstract
In the second of the insights from Jinfo's Research Focus, "Data analytics - ready your information service", director of research, Robin Neidorf, explains why it's essential to start discussions with vendors NOW around data licensing.
Item
There are no "norms" for data licensing - start discussions with vendors NOW
There are no shortcuts to understanding - and working with - vendors on data licensing. Start the conversations now, even if you do not have a specific project in development. And integrate regular informal discussions with your vendors about analytics and data usage into your plans for engagement throughout 2017.
By starting these discussions early, you gain:
- Time to understand the vendor's own analytics strategy and roadmap
- Influx of new ideas and perspectives about how and when to use data effectively
- Better leverage for investigating alternatives and negotiating terms
- Improved partnership throughout project implementation.
Our research reinforces the fact that vendors do not approach data licensing consistently; if you begin the discussion about data licensing when the need is specific and urgent, you risk project delays, fewer alternatives and expensive surprises in negotiation.
Many vendors themselves are uncertain as to how they plan to proceed in this emerging world. Early dialogue also enables you to influence their thinking and development, for mutual benefit.
