Robin NeidorfHow are you going to spend your time in 2019? The work we've done for our newly launched Research Focus, "The accidental technologist - where your expertise meets the new world", tells us you are going to invest some of it in developing new technology skills (like nearly 60% of respondents in our survey).

Your focus could be visualisation, machine learning or analytics; it could be chatbots or auto-summarisation. It could be another round of addressing the deficiencies of your intranet.

But you certainly can't learn every new technology coming down the line. The diversity of options - and choosing where to invest your time - can be just as daunting as skill development itself. Which technology will be the answer, and which the dead end?

The first step is getting a clear understanding of your entire context. Instead of asking, "Should we develop skills with analytics tools?" or "Should we learn to build apps?" you have to ask, "What problem are we trying to solve?" and "What is our unique role in solving it?"

Start with your needs instead of the technology itself to build critical resilience in the face of change. (And there will be change.)

Dive into "The accidental technologist"

In this Research Focus, you will find resources ranging from big-picture analysis of our technology environment to specific how-tos on some of the most common technology requirements for information teams today. Your guide to the articles and reports - as well as upcoming webinars and Community sessions - is our Insights and Actions report.

If you have a Jinfo Subscription, you already have access to all resources in this Research Focus. Simply sign in with your MyJinfo credentials.
