Abstract

My Favourite Tipples are shared by Katharine Schopflin, who is responsible for information governance at a London borough and president of SLA Europe. She shares some of her frequently-used resources to do with Freedom of Information, data protection, taxonomy and more.

Item

As information governance lead for one of the London boroughs, I have to keep on top of developments around key legislation, as well as knowledge management and public sector initiatives. Here are some sources I turn to regularly:

• Information Commissioner's Office: I simply couldn't do my job without this site. It provides the background to how we in the UK operate under the Freedom of Information Act and Data Protection Act (including the changes to the new act in 2018).

• The FOI Man: This is a more irreverent look at the same, again UK-focused. A "Free Resources" section includes podcasts, infographics, tribunal decisions and the "Exemption Index" which is particularly useful if you’re dealing with FOIs. 

• LG Inform Plus: From the Local Government Association, this is a UK site that provides plenty of free information, as well as the parts that we subscribe to. Unexpected things I've used it for include the taxonomy for our FOI Disclosure log. The subscription side includes tools on areas such as records retention. 

• KMWorld: With my knowledge management hat on, I have to include KMWorld, which has lots of interesting articles and case studies on knowledge management. It's been a great source for my upcoming book collaboration, "Practical Knowledge and Information Management", (due out from Facet Publishing in November).

For fun:

• The Guardian Lifestyle: This is my guilty pleasure - I particularly like the food articles by Rachel Roddy, Felicity Cloake and Jay Rayner.

A recent Jinfo article I found particularly interesting:

• As I no longer buy or assess information products as part of my job, my favourite Jinfo articles are those in which people talk about how organisational trends affect the way they work. Nothing beats hearing about how different ways of working actually feel on a daily basis.
  
  Recently, I particularly enjoyed reading the interview with Jantinus Meints, "Q&A with EY - managing a multinational information team", in which he talked about working as part of a team based across many different countries. And also the interview with Donna Terjesen, "Q&A with HBR Consulting - meeting the demands of modern law firms", in which she discussed outsourcing in the legal sector.
