Abstract

My Favourite Tipples are shared by Kristie Robertson, director of intelligence services at Manzama Intelligence. She picks some of her go-to resources for finding, seeing, knowing and analysing information.

While constantly staying on top of current news and events is an important part of my job (and something I'm able to do very well at my current company), how do you go about looking at past information? Being aware of the past is just as important as the present and will help you make future predictions for markets you're tracking.

• DuckDuckGo: This is a privacy superhero when it comes to browsers. I love it because it doesn't include personalised results (none of your browsing affects it), nor does it store your IP address, logs, cookies or anything else that could be used to track the research you're doing online.

• Internet Archive's Wayback Machine: I can't count the number of times I've been doing research and come across a broken citation or link. Wayback Machine may have crawled it when it was working, and you may be able to find an archived copy there. Even if your citation or link is still active, you may want to check it out on the Wayback Machine to see how it appeared when your author or creator first cited it.

• Harvard Law Library's Research Guides: In my field, I'm expected to either know or be able to obtain knowledge quickly. This is one place I go when I either need a refresher on how to do something or to discover a new topic altogether.

• Coindesk: This is a great site for news on crypto asset and blockchain technology. Fintech and blockchain have been huge research topics for us, and this site has been a wealth of information.

For fun: 

• Ravelry: I'm an avid knitter and have been for a few years now. Ravelry is a great place for knitters and crocheters to showcase their work and find patterns (they have numerous free patterns as well). My current favourite free pattern is a Wonder Woman wrap.

• Before starting this position at Manzama Intelligence, I was a librarian in a large Canadian law firm. I used Jinfo on at least a weekly basis, and always scoured every product review looking for new technology for my firm.
