In a world of (almost) too much information and data, we need to understand how and what we do with the data and information we get from free of charge and subscription-based sources.
Our current Topic Series "All About Usage - From Content Sharing to Data Mining" (register for free updates) is covering a variety of subjects. We are looking at how we use information and data, how to authenticate users, how we can help our clients and end-users comply with licensing rights and copyright... and what kind of platforms we are currently presented with compared to the early databases.
Respecting a fair use of knowledge should be a self-evident to everyone but unfortunately this is not always the case. Cultures where end-users happily share knowledge produced by others is often violating licensing rights and copyright.
An interesting list of suggestions came out of the article "Respecting the Ownership of Knowledge" by Irene Koren, dealing with what an information specialist needs to do in order to behave responsibly. Her point was that it requires awareness from the users, investment in knowledge, and that the information specialist has to ensure a fair use of knowledge.
Authentication has been a theme throughout the current series. In the article "Grappling with Authentication and Access in the Pharma Field", Catherine Dhanjal outlines what is happening with regards to IP access, single sign-on and so on.
This was followed up with a survey regarding authentication and single sign-on.
Conclusions from this survey and other research on the topic will be presented at Community of Practice sessions for Community-level Subscribers, on 15th or 17th September. The event, "Tackling the Authentication Challenge", is open to both vendors and buyers.
