FreePint Feedback - Mergermarket and S&P Capital IQ

Abstract
Robin Neidorf explains how FreePint answered a recent customer query about databases specialising in mergers & acquisitions and deep corporate financial data.
Item
We received a query from a customer who had read our recent Product Review of S&P Capital IQ. This research, analysis and workflow tool provides information on more than 3 million companies worldwide. The platform is aimed at users in investment banking, investment management, private equity and venture capital, as well corporate, government and academic subscribers.
The customer asked: "We were surprised to see that the researcher did not include Mergermarket in the competitor's scope for S&P Cap IQ. Would you know why? For us there are similarities between both products."
We put this question to our researcher for this review, Chris Porter, and were able to swiftly provide this feedback to the customer:
"There is certainly some overlap between Mergermarket and S&P Capital IQ, which will be of more interest to some user types than others. So if you are a customer of Mergermarket with a primary interest in M&A, then you may wish to consider S&P Capital IQ as an alternative in view of its ownership and transactions database; though from what Chris saw during the S&P Capital IQ review process, there was no direct equivalent for the specialised M&A-focused proprietary commentary that Mergermarket provides.
"In talking to FreePint, S&P Capital IQ positioned its service more broadly, placing particular emphasis on the highly detailed and very deep corporate financial data within the service, as well its extensive workflow tools. The vendor also stressed the suitability of the service for other types of user, such as asset managers, not targeted by Mergermarket.
"So you might say S&P Capital IQ is worth considering as competitor to Mergermarket; viewed in the opposite direction, Mergermarket would not be a direct competitor for the full range of data and functionality that S&P Capital IQ offers, though it could be for a subset of it."
Upcoming Reviews
We also liaised with our managing editor who was able to tell the customer that we are planning to review Mergermarket in the future. There are other tools on our editorial horizon too which focus on providing financial and M&A information.
Responding to customer queries is something we're very happy to do and do on a regular basis, with recent queries including "what reviews do you have coming up in the next few months?" and "which products have you reviewed in the media monitoring space?".
If you have a query feel free to contact us.
