Abstract
Robin Neidorf reports on the most pressing issues faced by information managers in manufacturing companies - and the FreePint resources which can help with those challenges.
Item
We regularly conduct interviews with information managers across a variety of industries. Based on recent interviews with information professionals in manufacturing companies, their pressing issues are:
- Maximising the value of the information centre
- Making information more visible throughout the enterprise
- Staying informed about sources of technical literature as well as more generalist business resources.
Many of the FreePint resources are directly relevant to the projects and priorities flagged as the most pressing in the manufacturing and industrial sector; below follows a selection of content tailored to these needs:
Maximising the Value of the Information Centre to the Enterprise
Is there an information centre out there that isn't focusing on maximising and communicating their value more effectively? Certainly it's a priority for our customers in the manufacturing sector. In some cases, the focus on value is part of other strategic projects, such as the improvement of knowledge management systems or intranets. In others, work on value is an underlying theme for all discussions.
This organisational priority aligns with the FreePint Topic of Value.

Making Content More Visible Throughout the Enterprise
As more premium content is delivered to end users in different ways, information centres are working on best practices for making that content more visible - and thus more valuable - throughout their organisations. Some of these solutions are technology-led, whilst others focus on user behaviours, and still others on workflow "baked into" a given product.
This organisational priority aligns with the FreePint Topic of Technology. In particular, the content in the Categories of Collaborative and social tools, Content management and Knowledge management are relevant to this priority.
