Abstract
Find out more about FreePint's Webinar: Big Data in Action: Plain Language, Practical Guidance and don't forget to register for the free event. It's a great opportunity to find out more about big data from four technology and service companies in the sector: Attunity, Connotate, Linguamatics and Opera Solutions.
Item
Big data brings about big projects, with many different participants, technologies and service providers. Making sense of this complexity is one of the first challenges many of us face when trying to understand the concept and where our own skills and experience might fit.
The upcoming FreePint Webinar: Big Data in Action: Plain Language, Practical Guidance, takes our usual practical approach to breaking down complexity. This free session will feature panellists from some of the technology and service companies already introduced through the FreePint Topic Series: Big Data in Action.
- Attunity helps enormous amounts of data move from one place to another as quickly as possible
- Connotate turns the web into your giant database
- Linguamatics tackles text mining, and Opera Solutions builds predictive systems through analytics (watch for Q&As with these companies in the coming weeks, by series producer Victor Camlek)
The panellists will describe the big data world from their perspectives, and then share a dialogue around the potential and limitations of these trends. They'll also address what's missing from these projects - often the kinds of resources, skills and insight that information professionals are positioned to provide.
Learn more about this session and register today, scheduled for 5 June at 11 am Eastern/4 pm BST. It's free, and seats are limited.
It's been a pleasure to work with Victor on the series and get a chance to explore the noise around this subject from a number of different angles. Since the last update, we've brought you views on pulling insight from social data, as well as the potential role of information professionals as knowledge champions in the big data arena.
Career prospects seem to be on a lot of minds, in fact. Last week Tim Buckley Owen added commentary about the risk of information professionals being sidelined as big data gets, well, bigger.
Tackling the Big Questions
We invited FreePint Subscribers and anyone registering their interest in this series to share any questions they have about big data, and most of the incoming questions relate to how information professionals can meet the challenge by developing new skills, repositioning themselves in an organisation and collaborating more effectively.
As a result, we're tackling these questions head-on in the next few weeks before the series ends. Watch for Victor's more in-depth commentary about potential career developments, along with comments from practitioners in the field about how his insights match their experience.
The series will conclude following the webinar, and then a talk I'll be delivering at the SLA annual conference, at the Corporate Information Centers Breakfast on Monday, 10 June. If you'll be in San Diego, I hope to see you there.
