Altimeter Group lives for disruption. This boutique research based advisory firm located in San Mateo, California not only concentrates on disruptive trends, but also prides itself on a disruptive business model.
Altimeter makes it clear that they do not cover mature markets, nor are they a competitor to the likes of Gartner. Their focus is on disruptive trends that will allow business leaders to pursue new opportunities and business models. Examples of disruptive technologies, as defined by Altimeter, include digital influence, content marketing and social media. Their services include the typical offerings from research and advisory firms, including reports, webinars, briefings, advisory and speaking. However, they add an interesting twist: all of their reports are available for free and can be accessed off the Altimeter website or directly on SlideShare. This creates the buzz that brings advisory clients to them.
The firm, located in what they affectionately call "The Hangar," in Silicon Valley, was founded by "Groundswell" author Charlene Li in 2009. Li, and many of the other Altimeter analysts, including Jeremiah Owyang, share a common background of working at the large IT research firm Forrester, where they established their reputations as top analysts in the technology space.
