Abstract
I think we’d probably all agree that the sheer amount of information "out there" is overwhelming. So the question is, where do you go to find content you can trust? Most people probably have their favourite sources that they check on a regular basis; but is this sufficient? How do you know you’re not missing anything? You can’t possibly read every newspaper, magazine, specialist interest publication, blog post, newsletter or opinion.

You could of course fire up your favourite browser, bang in a few keywords and wait for the results to appear? Easy to do but how reliable are the results? This is an all too familiar scenario faced by information professionals every day and is compounded by colleagues who can simply Google it. You know this is either a desperate hit or miss affair or a massively time consuming, and almost futile, exercise.
So, what if you were able to log into a website, create a search and receive a list of the latest happenings in your industry or chosen subject in a matter of seconds? What if this content was carefully vetted, selected and categorised by subject experts? What if you could share those search results with colleagues quickly and effortlessly? What if you could save the results of your search, create a professional newsletter and publish the results of your search to a website?
NewsEdge.com, from Acquire Media, which I reviewed for the March issue of VIP Magazine (Nr. 100) may have the answer. You can create as complex a search strategy as you can imagine, harness the power of a professionally constructed taxonomy and filter by a wide range of criteria to search a database of quality premium content. You can also search the Web at the same time.
NewsEdge.com is a web-based service that gives you the ability to perform real-time news management, research and redistribution. It provides a mix of premium licensed content and web-based articles, with articles from 8,100 sources evenly split between licensed and web-spidered content.
Once you have found the articles and news you require, you can quickly share them with colleagues via RSS feeds, email alerts or published newsletters. You can set up alerts using specified keywords which, when appropriate articles appear which contain the keywords, trigger updates to specified members of staff.
Companies can be monitored together with associated news articles featuring the companies and all can be collated with similar stories and published to a specified server. Sharing on Twitter and Facebook is also a breeze.
