BvD Bankscope: Putting some oomph! into banking analysis
The thought of poring through tons of data on global public and private banks may not send chills of delight down your spine. However, Bankscope, a global database and financial analysis tool from Bureau Van Dijk (BvD), manages to make the seemingly mundane interesting.
Bankscope proffers up a variety of options that provide visual analyses of hundreds of banking variables. Trying to figure out what the income is of other banks compared to the ones you have chosen? Run a Peer Analysis report that will display the results in colourful pie chart that eases analyses. Or perhaps you prefer to see the evolution of a stock price and assets over time for a specific bank? Bankscope will have just the line chart for you.
Another standout visual display comes from the Hyper Ownership Viewer. Bankscope is known for its depth of proprietary ownership data, connecting a company to its subsidiary or shareholder relationships. The Viewer tool allows you to take a relationship and screen some variables, such as percent ownership of a shareholder, and operating revenues of a subsidiary. This can then be displayed in a hyperbolic chart that looks interesting enough to grab someone’s attention away from their iPhone during any presentation.
The customisation options with this database also make it more valuable to the individual user. Notes can be added to a created list or individual bank report, or an entire section can be added to a report if the client sees fit. For the financial wizard lurking in all of us, User Defined Variables will allow you to define formulas in order to create your own financial variables that can then be used in most functions of the database.
Furthermore, an Excel and PowerPoint add-in is also available. This enables you to create templates and models and reuse the spreadsheet for any company in the database. The PowerPoint add-in allows you to insert a variety of objects in a presentation and populate them with live BvD data on a subject or company.
For a database containing almost 30,000 banks worldwide, Bankscope does a nice job of providing tools and resources that ease any burden of digging through the details. Download the full review at…
