Last Friday the Dayton Ohio Daily News reported that LexisNexis plans to shift a portion of its Ohio-based operations to an existing LexisNexis facility in the Philippines. The company, which employs 3,000 in its Miami OH Township site, did not provide specifics but assured the reporter that “Overall, LexisNexis remains committed to Dayton, Ohio".
According to the story, functions undertaken in the Ohio offices of LexisNexis include call centres, data centres, product development, editorial, finance, accounting, human resources, marketing and other units.
The timing of the decision most certainly ties into the recent departure of Kurt Sanford, former LexisNexis president of global operations for the company's legal business, to join ProQuest as CEO. Sanford's move gave the company a chance to step back and reassess global operations and strategic alignment. In fact, Sanford's former role with LexisNexis is being split, with former senior vice president of global content development Alexander Watson moving into an EVP of Operations role, and Jeff Reihl moving up from SVP of Technology and Operations into the role of vice president and chief technology officer.
With midyear results for the LexisNexis Legal & Professional division showing a -1% revenue growth rate and the recovery of the legal market "muted," according to parent company Reed Elsevier's interim filing, there's certainly pressure on the company to look for any pockets where cost savings can be achieved. It will be interesting to watch which operations, exactly, LexisNexis decides can be handled more effectively offshore.
