On the 4th January 2010 Thomson Reuters, acquired Discovery Logic, Inc. It is effective immediately, and is now part of the Healthcare and Science business of Thomson Reuters.

What will Discovery Logic, Inc. bring to the table? Undoubtedly it is the software, analytics and data mining capabilities.

We are already seeing similar requirements elsewhere in the information product industry. In 2009, VIP LiveWire reported on a very useful product called AIP UniPHY, What made this product so great was the technology behind it provided by Collexis Holdings. This allowed for 'extra power' to create valuable analytics.

There have already been hints of good analytics and visualisation mapping from Thomson Reuters, when we reviewed Web of Science for FreePint VIP in 2009.

We are all hungry and demanding when we it comes to wanting more 'bang for our buck' from our information products. We want more analyses and visualisation. But we don't just want pretty pictures. We expect our products to be able to join the dots to create ready made 'knowledge power packs' to aid decision making.

With information products we like them to be 'supercharged'. Speed is important, content is important, but we also want directional specific and custom analytics and reporting. We want the real intelligence behind people and products, who is working on what, with whom and where. Where are the ideas being generated, who is giving out the grants, and tracking inventions and patents?

With Thomson Reuters products, especially in healthcare and science, we already know the content is premium. Join that together with the added 'ooomph' that the Discovery Logic, Inc software power could potentially bring – it certainly wets the whistle for some interesting product development for us users.

Is Discovery Logic, Inc the catalyst for even better 'product power' from Thomson Reuters. Let us keep the door open on this story, it should lead to interesting developments.
