Abstract

Web of Science is a citation index database from Thomson Reuters, providing tens of millions of records of curated research content that is all connected through standard vocabulary, linked content and citation metrics from multiple sources.

This review:

  • Introduces Web of Science, its audience, key uses and main advantages

  • Examines the main sources of information which include over 12,400 peer-reviewed journals (including Open Access journals), books, patents and conference proceedings found in the Web of Science Core Collection which exceeds 60 million records

  • Looks at the entire Web of Science platform, which contains over 90 million records in four languages covering health sciences, physical sciences, social sciences and beyond

  • Puts the technology to the test to find out how the search options, outputs and administration stand up to scrutiny for expert searchers and for those newer to the platform

  • Sheds light on new features and sources

  • Outlines pricing

  • Notes the differences between Web of Science and competitors Scopus and Google Scholar

  • Provides an overview of the value the product offers and why it's particularly useful for in-depth research within academic and scientific fields.
