Includes:

  • Product Review of Solcara
Candace Cathey reviews cloud-based legal search application Solcara by Thomson Reuters Legal UK and Ireland. The federated search and knowledge management resource allows you to interrogate internal databases and external legal information using one search platform. This product is aimed at lawyers and information professionals in the legal industry who conduct research on a variety of sources and content.

She looks at its up-to-date and live searching of internal resources and online content that can be retrieved using the solution, including news, case law, legislation and legal documents aimed at the legal, business, government and information professional industry. Users can select their language preference from a choice of British English for the UK audience, and Canadian English and Canadian French for the Canadian legal market. Spanish-language resources are available to Spanish and Mexican law firms and businesses.

The search technology is also scrutinised as Candace puts a variety of functions through their paces, including user interactions, output capabilities and support, such as search results, bookmarking documents, creating collections and exporting results.

She concludes her review with a look at competitors in the industry such as OpenText Federated Query Server, HP Universal Search and EOS from SirsiDynix, as well as an overview of Solcara's development, growth and pricing.

  • Product Review of S&P Capital IQ
Chris Porter reviews research, analysis and workflow tool S&P Capital IQ, which provides information on more than 3 million companies worldwide. The platform is aimed at users in investment banking, investment management, private equity and venture capital, as well corporate, government and academic subscribers, and is particularly noteworthy for its highly structured company financial data as well as industry and other related data. The review starts with an introduction to the product and company and the value the platform offers.

A section on sources looks at proprietary content created by the vendor's 4,000 analysts, including public and private company intelligence, investment research, executive profiles, news coverage and vast range of auditable financials. The technology assessment covers the diverse search options, the extensive alerting services offered, custom output formats and time-saving functionality.

Product development and maturity of the platform are covered and Chris also provides information on Capital IQ's differentiation from its main competitors Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters and FactSet and its main value points such as well-thought-out workflow capabilities.

  • Product Review of Infomart
Infomart is a media monitoring and analytics platform serving communications professionals, marketers and brand managers based in Canada and around the world. The majority of current clients are Canada-based and focus on Canadian media sources, however the product can be used by anyone in the world.

The tool provides data, analysis and insights that allow companies to make business decisions based on media intelligence sourced from both traditional news outlets and social media. Reviewer Jan Knight looks at sources covered including traditional and social media, as well as geographic coverage and archive searching options.

The technology is put under the spotlight too and Jan provides an overview of the dashboard, process icons, the numerous navigation and search options, the variety of ways users can view, export and share results as well as the training resources available. She also analyses the value the product offers and takes a more detailed look at the "tonality" feature within media analysis and illustrates how the platform would benefit users, particularly those in marketing and PR, as well as outlining pricing options. Other companies offering media monitoring and analytics platforms include CisionPoint and Digimind.
