[Research Focus: Source Expertise - What It Means in a Google World]

Description

Do you feel pulled between the need to cultivate generalist skills in all your researchers and the need to develop specialist staff to better support higher-value services? If so, you're not alone.

Many information services struggle with this tension. With limited headcount and ever-increasing demands for higher value work, it's an ongoing challenge to:

• Differentiate between support that only the source experts can provide and the research that knowledge workers can and should do on their own
• Provide meaningful development opportunities for information staff
• Optimise staff utilisation for inbound queries.

Jinfo has worked with some of the most mature services to understand how they manage these challenges. We have documented the success characteristics, required resources and realised benefits of different approaches, including the incorporation of offshore or outsourced services.

During this session, you'll be able to compare your current approach to these characteristics, share ideas with your peers, and identify opportunities for improved service and outcomes through closer management of generalist and specialist skills on your team.
