Editorial

Robin NeidorfThe great variety of responses on our current survey on "Making Information Visible" intrigues me every day. I always get excited by fresh data coming in, but there's something about the detailed comments and urgency of the underlying questions of respondents in this one that has me scrolling through latest responses regularly.

This excitement is captured for me right on the first question of the survey, which asks respondents how "visibility" is defined in their organisations:

  • Some responses start with technology, describing global implementations of powerful search and discovery tools
  • Others describe library-driven initiatives to make users aware of resources and build their skills
  • Still others focus on their own efforts to insert themselves into project teams for greater visibility.

All are correct and true approaches to the timeless challenge of "Why can't we all find what we need at the point of need?". And all responses seem to reflect a certain underlying frustration that visibility of the right information is so hard to create and sustain.

The recent Subscription Update highlights the latest articles, webinars and Communities of Practice offered in the Topic Series: "Making Information Visible". Later in the series, we'll be publishing the results of the survey (there's still time to complete it now, and get your own copy of the report).

If you haven't yet done so, register your interest in this series. We don't promise definitive answers to the challenge of visibility. But we do promise, with the help of our series co-producers, contributors, and your feedback and involvement, to provide a range of viable, field-tested approaches to help you sort out how the variables of technology, content and user behaviour can lead to better visibility.
