Tracking Changing News Needs through FreePint

In recent Community of Practice (CoP) calls, I've been discussing results from the Sixth Annual Survey on News Needs & Preferences with customers. They want to discuss changes in strategy and product development at vendors, notably Dow Jones (recently written about for FreePint by Tim Buckley Owen), but also Nexis (see current review by Anne Lonergan) and more niche suppliers like Eureka (also recently reviewed, by Anne Jordan) and Newsdesk (also recently reviewed, by Penny Crossland).

But the harder part of the discussion - and the more interesting part - looks not at suppliers but at the buying organisations themselves. What is the real need for delivering news content into the organisation, now and into the future?

Catering for Users Both Shallow and Deep

The nub of this discussion came up in the CoP call when I presented to the group this quote from a survey respondent:

"We have two kinds of news users:

  1. Light, shallow, broad, summary
    (free may suffice).
  2. In-depth, multilingual, deep, historical
    (premium priced).

I would not want to make business decisions based on 1."

In my experience, buying organisations have typically tried to address the needs of both types of news users with a single product or solution. As we discussed the current options on the market, however, considering such variables as content sets, features, ease of implementation and cost-per-user, many on the call agreed that perhaps it would make more sense to treat each need separately.

Whilst this approach runs contrary to the trend towards reducing duplication of content, it may better suit users and the budget as well.

Stimulating Research and Fresh Ideas

I get excited by these discussions and by the potential they raise for additional research. They are best developed through a combination of FreePint's focus on our four Topics (Sources, Technology, ROI and Compliance), original research like our Survey on News Needs & Preferences, and regular calls with customers through our Communities of Practice.

When we bring these pieces together in a series such as the current FreePint Topic Series: Beyond Aggregation, we get a unique opportunity to go beyond product reviews and case studies and take a look together at fresh ideas that can change our industry.

Robin NeidorfIf changes in the market for news aggregation are creating headaches for you, the benefit of our reviews, analysis and CoP calls could not be more timely. With a FreePint Subscription, you get access to all our articles and reports, and with a Team-level subscription, you can participate in any of our Community of Practice calls. Complete the online form and start your FreePint Subscription today.

 My Favourite Tipples

Richard BagnallBy Richard Bagnall

I spent the last 20 years running Metrica which grew from start-up into one of the world's leading communications measurement businesses during one of the most exciting periods of change the media has ever faced. When we began the company the media that we were being asked to analyse was predominantly paper-based newspaper clips and magazines. Occasionally broadcast might also be included too although this was inordinately expensive to source.

These days content has exploded, audiences have fragmented and drawing insights from this exciting new world is more difficult than ever. The pace of change in the industry is frightening so I need to keep close to smart people and organisations who can help me make sense of the new media.

First, two organisations whose content I always value:

  • The Pew Research Center: Although an American-focused research "fact tank", I find the insights that it provides concerning issues, attitudes and trends towards the media to be vital in helping me understand what is coming to the UK market.

  • Journalism.co.uk: A veritable treasure trove of information for PRs and for journalists in the UK. As the changes to the media mean that more and more PRs are creating content, I keep a keen eye on its website and its Twitter feed for well-written and interesting articles affecting the crossover point between journalism and public relations.

And three smart people whose books and blogs that you should be reading regularly:

  • Jay Baer’s Convince & Convert blog: I was fortunate to once hear Jay speak at a packed PRSA International Conference in the USA. Jay is an extremely engaging speaker and a very bright mind who totally understands the challenges and opportunities that the new media creates. He has published two books – "The NOW Revolution" and, most recently, "Youtility", both of which should be on your reading list.

  • Seth Godin: Seth one of the best known names in marketing. He blogs every day at www.sethgodin.com, every post is well thought out, challenging, motivating, and always makes me stop and think how I could run my affairs better.

  • Brian Solis: Finally, Brian Solis is one of the communications industry’s leaders and at the top of his game. Having been a practitioner in the industry, Brian is now the principal analyst at the Altimeter Group. He is a fabulous speaker, and a prolific author, his latest book – "What’s the Future of Business" is a great read. Like Jay and Seth above, many of his insights are published on his blog at www.briansolis.com.

Richard Bagnall has over 20 years' experience in the PR industry. He joined Metrica at its inception in 1996, and as its managing director built the company into one of the world's leading PR measurement and media analysis consultancies. In 2009 he led the sales process of Metrica to Exponent Private Equity which went on to bring Metrica, Durrants and Gorkana together to create the Gorkana Group, where Richard was the Group's Managing Director of Global Insights and Analysis for four years.

He left the company in 2013 to bring his extensive experience of media analysis best practice to bear via consultancy work at Comms Clarity Consulting. As one of the world's most experienced consultants in communications measurement, Richard's experience is in demand for traditional media and helping to guide the PR industry towards social media measurement standards.
