FreePint supports the value of information in the enterprise. We do this by publishing practical articles and reports in four FreePint Topics.

If you do not yet have a FreePint Subscription, tell us a bit about your interests on this form, and we'll share information about how FreePint can help.

What's Essential? Engaging with FreePint Customers

Two weeks ago, I reached out to a select group of FreePint Subscription customers to invite them to be part of an ongoing "sounding board" to help us make more informed decisions about which products to review and which topics to cover in the coming months. Those who accepted the invitation received a link to a brief survey.

Within days I had meaningful input from customers representing key segments of our audience, and a clear plan for the coming months. Thanks to our new sounding board, you can look forward to reviews of Euromonitor Passport and competitor products, plus increased coverage of products and dashboards designed for competitive intelligence.

For topics of interest, we're now able to prioritise and plan coverage of:

  • Mobile security and authentication (Topic Series already planned for December 2013 - register your interest here)
  • Challenges in copyright compliance, particularly for international organisations
  • Pricing and licensing models, trends and challenges.

Dialogue in Communities of Practice

We have other valuable opportunities to connect with and hear from customers, particularly through Communities of Practice (CoP). These confidential calls provide unique peer-to-peer discussion on critical topics to organisations that have a FreePint Subscription at the Team level or higher.

In October's CoP calls, we've again picked up the challenges so many organisations are facing in evaluating different news aggregation products - a timely topic as our FreePint Topic Series: Beyond Aggregation is underway. If you'd like to attend one of the upcoming sessions, please email me at robin.neidorf@freepint.com for details (and a quote on upgrading your subscription if necessary).

When I facilitate these discussions, I particularly appreciate the opportunity to hear about projects in progress. Too often I don't get to learn about your work until a project is done and dusted, but there are so many interesting variables to consider when decisions are still being made and solutions remain unclear.

Face-to-Face Experiences

Despite the seamless connections we're now able to build and nurture through computer-mediated communications, there's still nothing quite like a face-to-face meeting. I had the honour of presenting a session at the annual meeting of the Pharma Documentation Ring in Chicago in September.

Over 30 information managers from pharmaceutical companies participated in a lively discussion around technology culture, some of the highlights of which you can read about here. For my part, I got to learn more about priorities for technology integration and advancement in information work at pharma companies - a key audience for us now and in the future.

Be Engaged

Robin NeidorfOne consistent piece of feedback we hear from FreePint readers is how busy you are - over-busy, with little time for professional development. Please don't let a busy desk keep you from getting the most out of FreePint. Complete our surveys, attend our webinars, consider a Team or higher subscription to access Communities of Practice, and attend them when you are eligible. Tell me about events you are organising or attending - I love to share our research with groups like the P-D-R.

If you're not sure how best to engage, start by completing the online form "How can FreePint help?" Or contact me directly at robin.neidorf@freepint.com with questions, ideas or suggestions.

 My Favourite Tipples

Penny LeachBy Penny Leach

The challenge of trying to choose only five "Tipples" proved impossible! In the end I have identified some of my favourite sites and services in relation to particular interests of mine.

  • Twitter: Although the site is often criticised as a vehicle for negativity, I have found the level to which people will share knowledge inspiring. And as Phil Bradley has ably written about, Twitter - or rather the people you choose to follow on Twitter - act as authority filters, giving a "value add" over and above feeds from other information sources. Twitter hashtags are also useful to glean content from conference sessions - see #SLA2013, for example. Most recently, I've been following "live chats" e.g. #UKLIBCHAT and #SLATalk. Let's hope the Initial Public Offering doesn't kill Twitter.

  • SlideShare: Another way to think of such human filters is as trusted guides through the wealth of information - see Penny Crossland's article in FreePint. Presentations and conference proceedings are obvious evidence of this, and are often posted free, even if the original event required payment to attend. Recent examples include: SLA 2013 papers on the SLA site, and on SlideShare and TFPL speakers on authorSTREAM. Hearing the speakers, however, is still preferable, and the rapid growth in webinars provides a cheap and easily accessible alternative (live or as a recording). The challenge is finding out about them - for me, the community of SLA both provides such webinars and highlights others of relevance to me via divisional LIS-servs or the SLA Europe event calendar.

  • Bobsguide: My job requires me to keep up-to-date with companies and other entities providing premium and "freemium" content products and information services. Some of the sites I follow are: Bobsguide for financial news, paidContent, theMediaBriefing and Fusion DigiNet for M&A news. Wikipedia is also a useful resource for company histories (allowing for "puff") and Google Alerts a free monitoring option - though the latter seems to be in decline.

  • The Harvard Business Review: I like to read - but not necessarily adhere to! - management insights. The Harvard Business Review has a free service that delivers daily short and succinct tips. For time management, I was inspired years ago by David Allen's system for "Getting Things Done" (GTD). Free newsletters are available from the site. A key part of GTD is the concept of "Inbox Zero"; the basic principles applied in the days of paper trails and I'm sure will apply in the post email world.

  • The London Review of Books: Every day I read (well, skim!) several newspapers (in print and digitally). Sometimes it's nice to have a less "newsy" perspective on the world, and I find The London Review of Books an interesting read. For those based in London (UK) there is the bonus of an independent bookshop with coffee and cakes and events.

Penny Leach specialises in the procurement and management of third party electronic information resources. A qualified librarian, Penny started her career in academic libraries, then transitioned to the commercial legal and banking sectors. After a recent stint in the media intelligence sector, Penny is currently managing vendor relations for the business information service of a UK-based international financial institution. Always active in professional networking groups, she is currently Secretary, and a Past President of, SLA Europe, the European Chapter of the SLA. Penny is also on the editorial board of Sage's Business Information Review.
