Popular FreePint Articles Demonstrate Range of Interests
As part of my work as Director of Research, I regularly review usage logs to learn what is most interesting to our readers. Top viewed articles from recent weeks include:
- Michael Levy's three-part series on sales intelligence services. The set takes the example of six different vendors to explore varying approaches to delivering sales intelligence through combining people- and company-related information with CRM systems.
- A brief overview of PharmaTell, by Yulia Aspinall. This one-stop shop for analyst reports in biotech and pharma attracted interest from readers far beyond the featured industries. Banks, law firms, governments and consultancies are equally interested in this type of insight.
- Mini Review of Alacra Compliance Enterprise, by Sophie Alexander. Another preview article for the FreePint Topic Series: Compliance in Context, this Mini Review updates a full review we published in 2012 by highlighting key advances in efficiency, auditing and reporting.
- Full Review of Global Financial Data, by Perrin Kerravala. Just when you think there couldn't possibly be another variant of financial data delivery, we discover another offering. Perrin particularly liked the product's deep archive, including rare data; access to unadjusted raw data, giving the user complete control over analyses; and APIs and plug-ins to integrate the data with other tools.
Staying Informed about Sources
The articles with the highest usage highlight the importance of the FreePint Topic: Sources. In fact, of the four FreePint Topics, this is the one most frequently cited by new or prospective subscribers as "must have".
It stands to reason that this should be the case: new sources of information - and new ways to use existing sources - appear all the time. Perhaps the biggest challenge for today's information professionals is to stay informed about this quickly-changing environment and provide valuable advice and insight for users and decision-makers looking to make the best of their time, not to mention their budget.
Determining the value of the information to the enterprise is also an essential part of today's information management role and two FreePint articles recently tackled strategies and suggestions on how to determine the "value" of information to the business and how to develop a personal value proposition.
Expanded Exploration of News Content
One of the hottest discussions around sources today relates to news aggregation - a critical category of content for most organisations. To support this discussion and your decision-making around news content, we're currently developing the FreePint Topic Series: Beyond Aggregation, to run in October and November 2013.
If you're familiar with our traditional publication calendar, you might notice that the scheduling of this Series coincides with our usual coverage of news products: our annual survey on news needs and preferences (2012 edition here), and our comparison of news products (2012 edition here). The Series approach enables us to expand and organise coverage, to include in-depth and mini product reviews, how-to and case study stories, Q&As with vendors and information managers, customer discussion opportunities and more.
If the news category is important to your organisation and in your content portfolio, you won't want to miss any of the FreePint Topic Series: Beyond Aggregation. Register your interest now, for Series updates, a free copy of our Buyer's Guide when published, and first notification of all webinar opportunities.

My Favourite Tipples
By Corey S. Halaychik, MLIS, MS
I'm an electronic resource specialist librarian by day and a pop culture enthusiast by night. That means my favourite tipples run the gamut - I've listed everything from trivia sources to productivity tools below.
- MentalFloss: MentalFloss.com offers a fun way to take a cerebral break while still learning something. Spend 30 seconds of your lunch break perusing the Amazing Fact Generator, and all your co-workers will be fighting to have you on their team next time trivia night rolls around.
- Science Fiction and Fantasy Stack Exchange: The Sci-Fi and Fantasy Stack Exchange is a Q&A website based around one of my favorite genres of film and books. Have a burning question about Sith Lords, Hobbits or anything else in the geekdom kingdom? These guys have an answer.
- Amy Porterfield's Podcasts: Social media marketing is essential for getting the word out about electronic resources. Amy Porterfield is an expert when it comes to addressing and engaging social audiences. Check out her podcasts for further information.
- Microsoft Office Web Apps: Between conferences, meetings and daily life, my workspace is everywhere and anywhere. Microsoft Office Web Apps make it easy for me to open a document saved to my SkyDrive and edit it on the go – from anywhere, on any device. It's a lot like Google Drive, only better.
- Feedly: Speaking of the search giant, I was ahead of the curve when Google Reader got the axe earlier this summer. Why? I'd already switched over to Feedly. This streamlined RSS reader is fast on any device with simple fluidity, perfect for saving relevant stories to read later or sending content to others.
Corey S. Halaychik, MLIS, MS, is an Assistant Professor and Electronic Resources Specialist at the University of Tennessee. He thrives on connecting users with resources and is always on always on the lookout for new ways to share and apply information. Corey can be contacted on: chalaych@utk.edu.

- Premium Access - Dispose of the Bathwater but Please Keep the Baby
By Tim Buckley Owen on Wednesday, 31st July 2013 United States authorities have recently been actively pursuing information companies. The New York Attorney General is investigating Bloomberg journalists' use of customer data for news gathering, a Californian judge has ruled that the government may pursue claims against Standard & Poor's, and the Securities & Exchange Commission has been investigating Thomson Reuters' accidental early release of Institute of Supply Management data. But even if these cases are clear cut, the New York Attorney General's requirement that Thomson Reuters stop some privileged distribution of University of Michigan consumer data raises issues of whether such "public good research" would be carried out at all without private subsidy.

- Maintaining a Healthy Relationship with Your Intranet
By James Mullan on Friday, 19th July 2013 You might imagine that most intranet managers would love their intranets, well I'm here to tell you that in reality that's far from the truth. Many intranet managers will have a love/hate relationship with their intranet. They might love what the intranet offers in terms of functionality, but hate what it looks like - or they might hate the functionality, but love what it looks like. So the question is, how can you maintain a healthy relationship with your intranet?

- Mobile - Secure, Yes, But Usable Too?
By Tim Buckley Owen on Wednesday, 17th July 2013 FreePint's Community of Practice on the challenges of deploying mobile throughout the enterprise couldn't be more timely. Gartner is predicting that 60% of information workers will be interacting with content using a mobile device by 2015, and Forbes Insights reports that senior executives are increasingly abandoning the traditional PC for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). But the difficulties of navigating small screen devices may partly explain the EPiServer finding that retailers are using mobile more as a means of securing customer loyalty than closing sales. Mobile security remains a growing threat, with Juniper reporting that Androids are especially targeted - although the Forbes respondents remain far more concerned about usability.
