Experiences in FreePint Engagement
Live events enable us to sit down face to face to build and cement professional relationships. The past month has offered a bonanza of in-person opportunities:
- Perfect Information Conference near London, in May: I presented a session on mobile content deployment in the enterprise, based on our research over the past three years. Participants were so eager to discuss the ideas that the organisers squeezed in an additional session on the first afternoon of the event.
- SLA Annual Conference in San Diego, in June: read more about the news, announcements, and impressions of the event, including a highly engaged breakfast meeting I led on big data.
- SIIA Investment Conference in New York, in June: growing a publishing company isn't easy, but interaction with FreePint's peers provided a lot of fresh ideas about new opportunities and ways to address challenges.
Increasingly, however, we need to increase engagement even when we don't have the opportunity to share coffee and chat. That's one of the reasons I've been so pleased with the development of FreePint Communities of Practice (CoP). I run our CoP on Mobile Deployment in the Enterprise, and I love being able to consolidate and present research to a small group of people and get their immediate feedback. We sometimes make transcriptions of CoP calls available as articles - check out the most recent, on vendor "chaos" in mobile content delivery.
All the feedback, questions and comments I've heard over the last few months tell me that there's interest in learning about options for media monitoring and news aggregation.
So, for customers with a FreePint Subscription at the Team level and higher, I am hosting some confidential Community of Practice conference calls to share research on aggregators and monitoring, and discuss the variables that affect purchase and usage choices. Read more about this Subscriber-only benefit here.
My first invitations to participate quickly resulted in full registration, so I added a second call... which is also already full. Clearly the topic has struck a nerve.
What hits your nerve? What topics would compel you to engage more closely with your peers, with vendors and with FreePint? Email me at robin.neidorf@freepint.com with your suggestions. And if you haven't yet, please complete our form to indicate your interest in FreePint Topics, so we can keep you informed about opportunities that match your interests.

My Favourite Tipples
By Roger Farbey
The sources shown below are not all work-oriented but are ones I use daily or frequently. Frankly, it is difficult to think of sources with which everyone else is not already acquainted and that I use not just daily but hourly (I'm thinking here of - obviously - Google, Wikipedia, Facebook and Twitter) but also ones which may possibly not be quite so universally used (BBC News, Tiny URL and LinkedIn, the latter of which I regard as a professional tool and distinct from the other social media sites).
- Organissimo Jazz Forums: As an avid jazz fan I find this web-based forum very good and friendly. It was founded to promote an organ-based jazz trio (hence the name) based in Michigan, but has evolved into a very popular music discussion forum.
- Transport for London Live Bus Arrivals: This is one I use everyday as I use buses in London and the 'burbs. It's UK only but is so useful for my iPhone as I no longer have to waste time waiting for the bus that never arrives. I actually use an app on my iPhone called 'Bus Times' which is an adaptation of the Transport for London app, mainly because it's easier to use quickly.
- LibraryThing: Very useful for assembling a "core collection" of reading material. I used this for collating our core collection of dental books published in 2012 by Tomlinsons in conjunction with CILIP's Health Libraries Group.
- The Cochrane Library: Next to Medline, The Cochrane Library is one we use the most and is very important in the world of biomedical research. As its "about us" blurb succinctly puts it: "The Cochrane Library is a collection of six databases that contain different types of high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making, and a seventh database that provides information about groups in The Cochrane Collaboration."
- LIS-PROFESSION@JISCMAIL.AC.UK: An email-based, JISC-hosted discussion list for library and information professionals which I use increasingly and on a daily basis. It's useful to have such a sounding board to realise you are not alone in the sometimes isolated world of library and information management.
Roger Farbey is Head of Library & Knowledge Services at the British Dental Association. He is a Fellow of CILIP and manages the biggest dental library in Europe. He was awarded the MBE in 2012 for services to dental information.

Non-text grey literature includes a wide variety of items, from audiovisual media and presentations to technical reports and tweets. Finding non-text research resources is not easy, many of the formats are non-traditional text, image or multimedia-based so they are not easily found using traditional database search tools. Cindy Elliott provides some suggestions on starting your search to find non-text grey literature.

- Financial News Publishers Take On LinkedIn and Twitter
By Penny Crossland on Tuesday, 11th June 2013 It seems that traditional print publishers have realised that if you can't beat the rapid-fire news coverage of social media platforms, you may as well join them. This was demonstrated in recent weeks by The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and the Financial Times, who have respectively announced and launched social media tools WSJ Profile, BloombergCurrent and fastFT to take on LinkedIn and Twitter.

- Managing Knowledge in Uncertain Times
By James Mullan on Thursday, 6th June 2013 Knowledge has always been viewed as being valuable within law firms. However, the ways in which knowledge is created and managed are often poor and not taken as seriously as they should be internally. By Tim Buckley Owen on Wednesday, 5th June 2013 Dow Jones looks set to subsume Factiva into its new portal, Product X, which will also include The Wall Street Journal, Barron's and Dow Jones Institutional News, plus risk & compliance and research & analysis products. Dow Jones stresses the value-add of unifying all this content, but some customers seem concerned about the loss of a separate Factiva, which has seen rapid expansion in content and functionality in recent years. Dow Jones is to explain its plans at the forthcoming Special Libraries Association conference, but meanwhile a recent News Corporation investor presentation has hinted at the scale of the change.

By Tim Buckley Owen on Wednesday, 5th June 2013 As Bloomberg continues its damage limitation exercise following use of customer data by some of its journalists, two commentators appear to take opposing views on the future of privacy.
