 My Favourite Tipples

Katherine AllenBy Katherine Allen

For my job, I need to keep across the latest developments in the library, information and publishing fields, as well as digital media and entertainment. I particularly value information sources that bridge these different sectors in new and interesting ways and so might spark ideas for an article or a conference session.

  • Nieman Journalism Lab The lab is described as “an attempt to help journalism figure out its future in an internet age”, but in fact I think it has even broader resonance for new models of publishing and information consumption. The website covers the latest developments and innovations, and there is a daily email update which links to all that day’s content.

  • Monday Note Written by Frédéric Filloux (general manager for digital operations at Les Echos Groupe) and Jean-Louis Gassée (a partner in a VC firm based in Palo Alto), Monday Note is an exploration of media, technology and business models and is available on the web or as a newsletter. I like its European perspective on the tech world, its wide ranging coverage (moving effortlessly between, say, wearable technology and boardroom goings-on at Apple) and the refreshingly long-form posts.

  • Netted For regular updates on cool new stuff, I really like the daily ‘Netted’ email. Through its recommendations, I’ve discovered and tried lots of new apps and websites which I wouldn’t otherwise have heard about.

  • Stephen’s Lighthouse A real treasure trove for info pros, Stephen Abrams’ prolific blog points to a myriad of resources - research, inspiration and ideas. I am constantly amazed at how much good stuff is on here.

  • 82nd and Fifth This is a new initiative from New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and I’m hooked! Every week, two episodes lasting two minutes each are released, each of which examines a single work of art through the eyes of a curator at the museum. There are also further resources which allow you to interact with the work in different ways – for example, exploring X-ray imaging of a Greek bronze statue. It’s beautifully designed and produced, and really showcases how digital media can illuminate cultural artefacts in unique ways.

Katherine Allen is European Business Development Director for Information Today and works on a variety of conferences: Internet Librarian International, Enterprise Search Europe, and publications including Streaming Media Europe, and Information Today Europe eNews. She is a columnist for EContent magazine. www.internet-librarian.com

  • Encouraging Collaboration Within Law Firms
By James Mullan on Friday, 17th May 2013
Failure, that's a horrible word to use at the start of an article. But that's essentially what this article is going to be about and, more specifically, why (some say) internal collaboration tools within law firms are doomed to fail. However, failure can also be useful in understanding how tools such as intranets, or collaboration tools like Confluence, are used and what could drive future projects to success.

  • Privacy - Don't Hold Your Breath
By Tim Buckley Owen on Friday, 17th May 2013
The discovery that Bloomberg News journalists have been making use of customer data raises broader privacy issues. Associated Press has complained about secret use of its telephone records by the United States Justice Department and the British polling organisation Ipsos MORI has been exposed trying to sell anonymised data from the mobile phone service EE to the London police. How effective is anonymisation, should internet service providers shield user data from the authorities and are some websites' privacy notices designed merely to protect the providers?

  • Taxpayer-Funded Research - Cheaper but Trickier?
By Tim Buckley Owen on Wednesday, 15th May 2013
Research Councils UK in Britain, and the Office of Science & Technology in the United States, have each instructed bodies that use taxpayers' money to fund research to start making all that research available free to users. This follows the Affordable Subscriptions for Periodicals campaign originally launched by Research Libraries UK and a new study published on ArXiv which concludes that the future of "elite" academic journal publishers may be doubt. More open access could mean a substantial reduction in costs for information professionals charged with acquiring research, but may also leave them with the challenge of deciding what's worth having.

Social intranets have promised a lot but they have to some extent failed to deliver on this promise - so are social features such as activity streams, profiles and forums really necessary for internal communication? James Mullan reviews what you need to consider when planning to implement social tools on an intranet.

  • Big Data - Time To Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone?
By Tim Buckley Owen on Monday, 13th May 2013
Recent reports by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and Cisco about the importance of mastering big data for future corporate success should represent opportunities for information managers. Yet the latest Business Information Review (BIR) survey shows that information services are, as yet, little involved in big data projects. BIR also highlights other areas where info pros may be missing out, and reports that the most successful information services are the ones that are adding value through activities well outside their comfort zone.
