Two recent FreePint feature articles focus on topics heard around many a conference table: my "Big Data, FreePint Style" announces a publication series we'll be producing in April and May, exploring real-world applications of this somewhat fuzzy concept of "big data". I'm excited about the articles, reports and webinar we have planned, and I invite your suggestions for case studies, topics and speakers.
Tim Buckley Owen reflects on much of the writing he's done on the topic of compliance, with "Content and Compliance Challenges Deliver Opportunities for Info Pros". At its heart, compliance is very much about information management. Tim's article, which is the opening editorial for the FreePint Report: Content and Compliance (Subscribers, login to download and read), names only a handful of the alphabet soup of regulations today's organisations face, which information professionals and information tools can support.
There's no regulation to manage tweets gone wild, though. Tim's usual wry commentary, in "Sorry Bosses - You Can't Shut Down Twitter" (Subscriber) made me laugh and cringe simultaneously.
Someone is always looking for company information. Those searchers should take note of Key Note, reviewed by Andrew Grave. And for researchers for whom the "why" is as important as the "what", Jan Knight's editorial on "Context is King in the Research Sphere" offers a jumping-off point for discovering some of the articles, product reviews and reports FreePint offers which value context as much as content.

My Favourite Tipples

I think that technological advances will keep on forcing librarians to redefine their job descriptions and their roles. There are several critical skills that librarians need to thrive in today's digital world and it's really important for librarians to stay abreast of the latest trends in web communications and social media. That will help when planning and executing programmes for mobile technologies.
- Vizify is a social media website that works in concert with other websites like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to create a unique, unified social media profile for users and turns your social network into an infographic about your life. Vizify uses the data you share on social media sites to automatically create visualisations explaining who you are. Vizify lets me organise the information in my social media accounts in a way that makes it understandable, even meaningful.
- Pixable helps you discover the photos that matter. See the top photos shared by your friends on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter in one place. Pixable ranks and sorts your friends’ photos and videos based on popularity and your connections, giving you a more personal viewing experience. Pixable lets me find the best photos and videos shared on my social media accounts, it's a really useful tool.
- Daily Infographic features the best information design and data visualisation from the internet every day. Data visualisation, when done correctly, is an effective way to analyse large amounts of data to identify correlations, trends, outliers, patterns, and business conditions. Daily Infographic curates the most interesting, visually stimulating, mind blowing infographics and helps me to discover new things.
- ResearchGate is a social networking site for scientists and researchers to share papers, ask and answer questions, and find collaborators. The site has been described as 'a mash-up of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn' that includes profile pages, comments, groups, job listings, and ‘like’ and ‘follow’ buttons for the purposes of crowdsourcing research. ResearchGate helps me to stay informed and connected with the scientific community.
- Learnist is like a Pinterest for education, as it allows users to collect web resources and add them to "Learnboards" to educate an audience about a particular subject. It takes an innovative approach to learning that "takes the best bits of existing social media platforms and forges them into a powerful informal thinking and learning platform". Learnist allows me to to collect web resources and add them to "Learnboards" to educate our library users about particular library services.
