Introduction
By Michelle Manafy
Things are changing here in the FreePint Newsletter.
We're introducing FreePint Features, which provides commentary and insight about important issues, trends and solutions relating to the value of information in the enterprise. We also share latest developments with FreePint Family resources and tips on how to use them to build the value of information in the enterprise.
FreePint Features is where you'll find my latest commentary, "Libraries, learning and the bottom line", which focuses on educating students and patrons about the value of information.
In this issue of the FreePint Newsletter, you'll also find some useful insights on collaboration, including the articles "An app for every occasion" and "Facebook launches interest lists", from FUMSI as well as our VIP guest editor's look at how two of the recently reviewed products, Bibliogo and Silobreaker Premium, empower collaboration around information.
All of the changes in the FreePint Newsletter reflect a lot of great development throughout the company. We're working hard to make it easier for you to identify and access the content that's most useful to you, whether by one of our brands, or via our content categories, where you can find articles from across the FreePint Family organised by industry topic or by job function.
Best regards,
Michelle Manafy,
Director of Content

My Favourite Tipples
By Corrina Mason
As an Information Specialist at the Human Resources Professionals Association, I am constantly looking for new ways to create information services for members, as well as support internal organisational research. I have to stay on top of social media and information service delivery trends, as well as keep abreast of topical business areas such as human resources and association management. Like many other information professionals, I am also a device-junkie - so I like to test the newest, latest programs and applications to help me and my devices stay connected. The following are a few great "tipples" that have proven so useful, personally and professionally, that they've become part of my routine.
- Imagine Canada Nonprofit Library Commons: Imagine Canada is the non-profit for non-profits in Canada. Their mission is to "advance knowledge and relationships to foster effective and sustainable charitable and non-profit organisations." To this end, their online database features collections on non-profit boards and governance, corporate social responsibility, non-profit management, and human resources, and has been a boon to me in my professional life, as I can confidently refer our business users to their distinctive service. Their unique collections target issues specific to the non-profit community, bringing together a wealth of unique materials on issues that often get overlooked in more mainstream business resources.
- Sugarsync: Free cloud storage! With all the different devices I have acquired over the past year or two, I was starting to feel the lack of continuity, but I didn't want to spend a lot of time or money to rectify the situation. A benevolent tipster told me about Sugarsync, and now I just put items in my "Magic Briefcase" to automatically sync my smart phone, laptop, desktop and tablet. 5GBs of free cloud storage makes working on the go an enjoyable experience instead of an exercise in trying to remember where I saved the latest version of my work. If you need more storage, their rates are quite reasonable, and I have found that their interface is intuitive and their app presentation is clean and uncomplicated.
- Google Alerts: Sure, there are more sophisticated alert systems - but for quickly and easily keeping myself up-to-date on a handful of topics that matter to me most, I rely on Google Alerts. They are easy to set up, have a few simple filtering options and once you pinpoint the right keywords, you are all set. You can't track trends or monitor opinion, like you can with many other fee-based media monitoring systems, but if your purpose is to simply read the latest popular media on a given topic (and you already have a gmail account) it's definitely worth it to set up a few alerts.
- Working in Canada: Whether you are just starting out, mid-career, or already at the top of the heap, it can't hurt to know more about labour market projections, salary data, and the educational qualifications you need to keep yourself relevant. This is an eye-opening free resource for both job-seekers and employers to learn more about the Canadian labour market and more than 500 distinct professions. Search by occupation, using National Occupational Classification codes, or do a title search to find out more about the skills and qualifications you need to excel in your chosen profession. You can also find out what the current salaries and wages are in your region and what the projected for that job will be in the future - and since Human Resources and Skills Development Canada has recently integrated their online job board, you can search actual job openings in that field with just the click of a button.
- Toronto Deskset Facebook Group: This is clearly a fun, passionate bunch of folks, and even if you cannot attend their events, their Facebook group is worth joining. Toronto-centric, they post links to many articles that affect librarians, information professionals and knowledge managers in the Toronto community, bringing a fresh perspective to timeless issues, as well as acknowledging the more human side (and fun) side of being an information professional.
Corrina Mason is an Information Specialist at the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA). She is the content curator of the HR Daily, a daily news compendium of HR and management issues; community manager of Water Cooler, HRPA's members'-only social networking site; association research librarian and all-around business information literacy advocate.

Latest articles in FreePint Features:
- Libraries, learning and the bottom line
By Michelle Manafy
This month I had the privilege of speaking at two library events. The first was a remarkable response to a lack of budget for employee travel. The New York Public Library system employs hundreds of librarians. Thus, it isn't a great surprise that it can't afford to send many of them to conferences and educational events. Yet the need to keep staff informed and up to date on information tools and strategies inspired the NYPL to seek a grant to fund its own two ...

An app for every occasion
By Sarah Dillingham
Get on a train almost anywhere in the world and look around. What's half the carriage doing? They're fiddling with their phones, faces lit up with a yellowy glow. The no. 1 business requirement I hear is "Can I get that on my phone?" Organisational forays into mobile access thus far range between the all out and the tentative.

Facebook launches interest lists
By James Mullan
Do you like to organise your friends into lists on Facebook? Yes, then you'll definitely be interested in a new feature launched by Facebook last week. The feature, called "interest lists", allows users to turn Facebook into their own personalised newspaper, incorporating feeds of subjects and topics that matter to that user.

VIP Magazine
Collaboration around information
By Yulia Aspinall, PhD
Effective information and knowledge sharing are crucial aspects of both personal and organisational life. Social media tools such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter have become indispensable parts of everyday life, and in doing so have brought about a revolution in personal sharing and exchange of knowledge and information. Organisations also recognise the value of sharing, although they may not be particularly good at it, and increasing numbers have implemented programmes and business processes to facilitate and encourage a sharing culture. Information professionals, equipped as they are with skills to find information and the capabilities and tools to share it, are well positioned to support this organisational desire to create open information and knowledge sharing.
There are not, however, many online products which combine the ability to search specialist websites, and store and share information using the same interface. Portals, for example, are useful tools for sharing, but you can generally only search the content of the portal, and not the external websites.
For this reason, I found one of the reviews in this issue of VIP, Bibliogo, particularly interesting, as it introduces a specialist product with capabilities to search, store and share information. With a scientific background, this website is especially relevant to me since it addresses the need for regular monitoring, storing and usage of both scientific and medical literature...
