Listening to the demands of the mobile enterprise

This trend is about as subtle as that guy at the next table hollering into his phone about his new boat, business deal or hot date. Research reinforces what we see (and hear) all around us: mobile has moved into every corner of the world and its impact will only increase. The number of active mobile broadband subscriptions has already reached nearly 1.2 billion worldwide, according to estimates by ITU (PDF). Pew Research Center reports that 84% of US adults have a cell phone, one third of which are smartphones, and that about 19% of Americans own a tablet device.

Listening to the demands of the mobile enterpriseJust last week, Forrester predicted that by 2016, one billion people throughout the world will own smartphones and tablets. Significantly, Forrester points out that many of these people will take these devices to work, according to its report Mobile Is the New Face of Engagement.

According to Pew, 51% of cell phone and 79% of smartphone owners use their phones to get information they need right away. While some of this information consumption is personal, personal use of technology and information certainly influences the way in which workers expect to use these tools on the job. And, while mobile has been a factor in the workforce for some time, the increased usability and functionality of smartphones and tablets is raising expectations of mobile content consumption within large enterprises.

In a blog post written by one of the Forrester report's authors, Ted Schadler writes that mobile provides "a new ability to empower customers, employees, and partners with context-rich apps and smart products to help them decide and act immediately in their moment of need". According to Forrester's report, "CIOs must step up and work with other executives ... to implement an enterprise-wide mobile strategy".

FreePint's research into enterprise mobile content reinforces the need for a strategic approach to mobile. Only a year ago, FreePint Research revealed that security, authentication and the lack of a compelling business case for mobile content were delaying the deployment of mobility for enterprise content buyers. "One short year later, the landscape in the enterprise has changed: more pilot projects, more urgency in figuring out these challenges and more progress towards a mobile workforce are all in evidence."

Although our newly released FreePint Research Report: Enterprise Market for Mobile Content 2012 suggests that the excitement and pace of the consumer market will not be replicated in the enterprise market, it also finds that information managers recognise that they need to "lead their organisations in the mobile revolution".

While most of the concerns inhibiting enterprise mobile content deployment the first year persist this year, FreePint Research finds that today "even the most risk-averse organisations ... recognise that the workplace of the future will be less desk-bound and require expanded options for accessing content on mobile devices".

The numbers tell us unequivocally that usage and usability of mobile devices will continue to increase. Numbers don't tell the story quite as eloquently as the people who need to put content to work in the enterprise. The FreePint Research Report: Enterprise Market for Mobile Content 2012 offers insight into the minds of information managers and the organisations they represent. As one interview revealed, mobile is "really an important cultural change: we've got workers now who are very used to being able to access information wherever, whenever, in their own lives, and they want to do it in their working lives. It's having a big impact on the way the organisation thinks about information flow". The workers are speaking and they are saying something about information worth listening to.

Best regards,
Michelle Manafy,
Director of Content

 My Favourite Tipples

Daniel Verbit By Daniel Verbit

As a library administrator at a small private school, any sites or services that help me stay on top of trends or simplify tasks are appreciated. My daily projects range from supporting our digital archives, managing e-resources, digitizing work flows to web design for the library site and subject guides. Here are few that I use often to help me with daily tasks.

  • Printfriendly: I try to keep as many things digital as possible, but I use this website to print out webpages to read at later time (and for other print-specific purposes). This great site and its companion bookmarklet takes away as much extraneous information as you want, eliminating advertising and paring it down to plain text so you save ink/toner and have only the information you want in hard copy.

  • Picnik: Sometimes you need a quick painless way to resize or alter an image, such as when designing pages and subject guides or writing documentation. Picnik provides all of your basic editing features on this web application. It has been purchased by Google, though, and the site states that Picnik will be migrating to become a feature of Google+ in April.

  • Screencast-o-matic.com: When your goal is to communicate issues like discovering bugs on a project or generating learning objects, videos are always better than a screen shot. Screencast-o-matic uses a Java applet to record anything on your desktop. You can publish to MP4, AVI, FLV, or upload to YouTube. It is easy enough for anyone to use, so it has great applications if you manage remote locations. If you upgrade to the pro account, it removes watermarks and allows your recordings to be password protected along with some other features.

  • Code4Lib: Started as a mailing list and IRC channel in 2003, it has evolved to be a "volunteer-driven collective of hackers, designers, architects, curators, cataloguers, artists and instigators from around the world." They have created their own open access peer reviewed journal.(US CC-BY license) Some articles are coder targeted but it also offers great examples of how to use technology to achieve goals. If you deal with any type of technology, it is worth a look every quarter.

  • I also want to include one final tipple: your local library or professional group. Seek them out and join them whether they are affiliate of a national group or a local version. If you there isn't start one yourself. Providing community and support is one of the most important resources I know of.

Daniel Verbit is the library information systems specialist at York College of Pennsylvania. He also serves as chair of Associated College Libraries of Central Pennsylvania, a consortium of academic and research libraries united by a rich heritage of and strong commitment to sharing. He coordinated the launch of the LibGuides this past fall. He is currently working on web development, electronic resources integration, and other emerging technologies including mobile interfaces. Daniel is always working on ways for colleagues and patrons to live better through circuitry. Follow him on Twitter @YCPDAN.

Evolution in Enterprise Demand for Mobile Content

By Robin Neidorf,
Director of Research,
Free Pint Limited

Last January, FreePint Research published Enterprise Market for Mobile Content. The report, based on interviews with 27 information managers and content decision-makers, explained why so many vendors were having a difficult time encouraging uptake of their mobile apps within large corporations. While the consumer and individual professional markets were growing like mad, most vendors had experienced only minimal interest from large multinationals for delivering mobile content to end users.

The key reasons for this lack of interest were:

  • Security and authentication: mobile systems could not accommodate large organisations' requirement that users be recognised and authenticated without separate login. Additionally, critical questions around where sensitive data resides and how well it is protected needed to be answered.

  • Lack of compelling business objectives in mobile content: many interviewees noted that the kind of information workers need away from their desks is not the kind that vendors have been offering. In-depth information work was more likely to be done at the desktop, with results emailed to a worker in the field.

  • Interoperability of platforms and systems: when interviews were conducted in mid-2010, most apps were built for an iPad, whilst most multinationals were BlackBerry environments.

  • Cost: with so many competing pressures on the content budget, information managers were unlikely to consider add-on offerings like mobile, particularly when they were not hearing intense demand for them.

It hasn't taken long for this change to start to take hold. FreePint Research is currently updating the research on enterprise demand for mobile content by revisiting most of the interviewees from 2010 and expanding the population with another 10 interviews. The results indicate that one short year has brought about much more practical action on mobile delivery of content - more pilot projects, more funding for projects and more interest from workers at every level of the organisation. Although many of the same concerns around security, compelling business case and cost remain, a number of key variables have indeed shifted, making mobile delivery of content more appealing to the enterprise.

From apps to platforms

An early error that vendors made was to build iPad apps for their offerings. The iPad, just released in January 2010, was the only tablet device on the market throughout 2010, but it was not compatible with enterprise systems.

Very quickly, however, this error has been addressed. Smart vendors are now developing platforms for their products, which can more easily be run and/or adapted to run on different devices - tablets, smart phones or desktop systems. Rather than locking the content in an app restricted to a single type of device, a platform approach creates a more flexible offering. By doing so, vendors have already made these offerings more appealing to the enterprise...

  • Going round in circles

I was tempted to call this post "All my life's a circle" after the 1972 hit Circles, by the UK band The New Seekers (yes, I'm old enough to remember it). Why? Well, it seems that many people are seeking something more than is currently offered by the current giants of social media i.e., Facebook and Twitter. Google has a little something called Circles - which is part of the Google+ platform and seems destined to make a big splash in the social collaborative space. But then I thought this was probably a bit too cryptic, hence the arguably more appropriate title chosen.

  • More mobile than ever

As anyone with a teen in the house can attest, their ability to text seems like a natural-born gift, as instinctive as breathing. Teen boys took in 382 MB of data per month on their mobile devices, and girls used 266 MB on average.
