Intelligently competing

Competition is a good thing. For buyers, it means choices and a bit of bargaining leverage. For sellers, it keeps the focus sharp and healthy competition indicates a healthy market. And, for any industry, keeping an eye on the competition is critical to ensure continued vigour.

Competition is a good thingThe increasing pace of innovation, change and customer expectations for real-time market responsiveness have not only made competitive intelligence ever more important for business success, but are also transforming the CI process. While some of the traditional methods remain reliable, there are emerging tools and techniques that those seeking CI must master to keep companies competitive in the market.

Like so many information-related practices, CI was once a people- and technology-intensive undertaking. Over the years, processes that were once focused on laborious deep dives into data and analysing it for patterns, trends and insights have - if you listen to vendor value propositions - become increasingly automated, involving alerts, dashboards and monitoring.

Yet evaluating the tools that purport to deliver CI on a silver platter poses a significant information challenge of its own. And, as we all know, even with the best of filters, genuine intelligence is derived only through insightful interpretation and application of knowledge. Here at FreePint, we endeavour to address both of these challenges: in VIP by evaluating established and emerging premium information tools; and in FUMSI by sharing practitioner insights into how they go about gaining, delivering and leveraging CI.

We've also created the FreePint Report: Buyer's Guide on Competitive Intelligence, which we are pleased to offer you a complimentary copy here. In addition to rounding up some of the CI tools in the market, it also includes some of the valuable hands on insights that FreePint and the members of our community are known for.

For those of you seeking more in-depth analysis of some of the premium CI tools in the market, we're also offering the FreePint Volume: Essential Competitive Intelligence Collection, which can be purchased in the FreePint Shop. It includes VIP reviews of four of the leading CI tools - Radian6, Knowledge Exchange, Knowledge Works, and Intelligence Plaza - along with the Buyer's Guide on Competitive Intelligence.

From market data to SEC filings, breaking news and social media, information about your competition is everywhere. As information professionals, the challenge is to find ways to deliver it better, faster and smarter. In some cases, CI databases or social media monitoring tools will unearth significant sentiment, opinions and insights. In others, accurate analysis of long-term trends comes from robust archival data.

The increasing pace of change has us all working harder to keep up. And we at FreePint are here to help give you the competitive edge with insights into today's competitive intelligence tools and techniques.

Best regards,
Michelle Manafy,
Director of Content

 My Favourite Tipples

Ellen Naylor By Ellen Naylor

I specialise in research which involves connecting with people, whether over the phone or in person. As a competition detective, I have learned that the best insight comes from talking to people whether through cold calling or warm calling. Here are a few places I look to locate people who are knowledgeable about the topic or company I am researching. However, sometimes it is faster to cold call a company, and let them transfer me to the right person, especially when I am researching small companies, who are not well represented on the Internet or social networks.

Once I have identified where these experts might reside, I start with my 'Big 2': The Chamber of Commerce Directory, which accesses 7,500 chambers across the US, including contact information and numerous links. Drill down to the individual chamber, identify who you want to talk to, and learn a bit more about them through their LinkedIn profile or YouTube to warm up the call. Many times the companies I research are a big fish in a small pond, and the local community proudly boasts about them.

My second 'Big 2' is the Economic Development Directory, which is global. Again you can drill down to the specific geographic area. Often economic development employees can refer you to the right people in government. I value this since my experience wading through US government websites to find the right person can be incredibly time consuming. However, once located, the right government contact is usually knowledgeable and willing to share.

My favourite one-stop shopping for news is Newslink. I like it since it's global and also links to small town newspapers which can offer both relevant information to warm up calls, and good people to connect with in the local community. Newslink also provides links to magazines, and to US radio and TV channels, so is a Mecca for a news junkie.

While iSeek is a general purpose search engine, I like its ability to organise search results when I look up people. It organises the results by topic, people, places and organisations. It's a quick place to learn about a person before you call them, but doesn't include social media. I think 123people does a good job of providing an individual's social media presence.

Two favourites for both learning and finding experts are Slideshare and Quora. Use them to learn more about topics you are unfamiliar with. While companies and consultants like to advertise their expertise through Slideshare presentations and by answering questions on Quora, they often share information nuggets in the process. Most people who publish on Slideshare or Quora want you to find them, so they are receptive to your phone call.

Ellen Naylor is the founder of The Business Intelligence Source, a competition detective consultancy particularly known for the sales-marketing aspects of competitive intelligence (CI) as well as cooperative intelligence, which builds strong people skills around leadership, connection and communication - often the missing links in research and CI. With over 25 years of marketing and sales experience, Ellen has earned her BS (blarney stone) degree, and is an expert researcher in just about any industry. She teaches "HOW" to collect & organise intelligence, most notably through elicitation and good communication skills. She earned her MBA at University of Virginia's Darden School and her BA at the University of Notre Dame. She was raised in an international community in Yokohama, Japan, and still has close ties to most of her childhood classmates. She would love to connect with you on LinkedIn and Twitter.

An introduction to DocuTicker's new editor...

It's a pleasure to meet you, FreePint and DocuTicker readers. My name is Peggy Garvin, and I am the new senior contributing editor of the DocuTicker Newsletter and DocuBase database. The focus of my career for the past 24 years has been meeting the government information needs of professionals in various roles, including information professionals, policy analysts, elected officials, and civil servants. DocuTicker is a natural for me, and I am happy to be on board.

For years now, DocuTicker has been popular among business people, market researchers, academics, journalists, interest groups, students, librarians, and information managers for substantive information not easily found elsewhere. It's a great service, but we hope to make it better. Our first improvement will be the most noticeable: the newsletter redesign. We hope subscribers appreciate the move to a cleaner look.

ProQuest Dialog for novice and experienced searchers

Beverley CraneBy Beverley Crane
FUMSI: Find

Whether you are an old hand at searching Dialog products or you are a novice, searching methods in ProQuest Dialog™ allow everyone to achieve precision in their search results. Beverley Crane explains how this is possible using thesaurus, set searching and restricting searching in a multi-file search.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'One of the features of the new ProQuest Dialog™ is that both novice and experienced searchers can find the information they need easily and quickly without having to rely on commands as in Dialog legacy products. The online thesaurus in ProQuest Dialog enables users to add precision to their retrieval and save time in coming up with the right vocabulary to obtain the results they want. You can save, print, email, create Alerts or RSS feeds and more. And, to manage results, you can access My Research, your personal space where you can save, store and organise your retrieval and share your results. The new features built into the platform mitigate the need for heavy command searching while retaining the precision and power required by information professionals.'

Some ways to use Storify - curate an archive, add context, tell a story

Jo BrodieBy Jo Brodie
FUMSI: Use

Much of social media content is very much "of the moment" but often content is created which needs to be captured and commented on for future use. That's when Storify comes into its own as it allows you to embed individual "units" of social media, such as Facebook updates, tweets and YouTube videos, into a single Storify blog post. Jo Brodie reviews Storify and compares it with other tools such as Chirpstory.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Storify is an online blogging tool that lets you embed individual "units" of social media, such as Facebook updates, tweets and YouTube videos, into a single Storify blog post. You can select elements from other people's Storify stories, or add an entire Storify post into your own. While composing your piece you can add context by inserting a piece of text before or after each added element. Once finished and published you can even embed your Storify compilation, in its entirety, into other blog platforms.'

VIP issue 93VIP Magazine: On the Horizon

VIP Magazine features VIP Horizon, a brief summary of important news in the information industry, interpreted to help information managers communicate upward regarding strategy, risk management and planning for change.

The most recent issue of VIP (No. 93) features the following in VIP Horizon:

To judge from the sudden surge of interest, Big Data is set to become the next Big Thing. McKinsey believes that analysing large datasets will become a key basis of competition, although integrating data from legacy systems may prove problematic and there are likely to be skill shortages among analysts.

An IBM survey indicates that Big Data is a priority for mid market companies as well as global enterprises. But Gartner warns that the very term puts too great an emphasis on the volume of information handled, whereas it's finding patterns in it that helps organisations make better business decisions.

Companies are ill-prepared for dealing with the United Kingdom's new Bribery Act, according to a survey from Thomson Reuters. Introduced at the start of July, it creates an offence of failing to prevent bribery, even when the company didn't know about it.

An Economist Intelligence Unit study adds that few companies have the "big picture" they need for effective risk and compliance management, while business intelligence specialist Information Builders finds that most IT decision-makers are aware that their data isn't reliable. But all the business intelligence in the world may not fix things if employees are deliberately keeping inconvenient truths concealed.

Implementing the European Union cookie Directive could result in a plummeting of cookie use, according to evidence from the United Kingdom Information Commissioner's Office. It experienced a 90% drop in recorded visits to its own site after introducing statutory cookie opt-in rules.

Meanwhile the European Union is considering introducing Do Not Track legislation of the kind contemplated in the United States, and has challenged the industry to come up with a standard within 12 months. So anyone with a business intelligence strategy that depends on knowing what all their customers are doing online is likely to need a serious rethink.

Pubget doesn't require long hours of training; a likely reason for its popularity among students. The interface is a good mix of Google's simplicity and PubMed's complexity.
