Editorial
By Michelle Manafy
Disruption for the better
When I started university, I'd never used a computer. In my first news writing class, the professor informed us that all work would be turned in via the journalism department's network. As if mastering reporting and writing skills weren't enough, we were confronted with DOS prompts and command lines. Of necessity and desire, I learned a lot that first semester and quickly embraced computer-based writing - in fact, by the end of my first semester, I was working as computer lab monitor. There was no denying how working digitally transformed my writing processes. And yet, looking back, it was a minor impact when compared with the havoc the internet would wreak on the craft of journalism only a short time later.
In those days we learned to research in the stacks, master microfiche and work the phones. Oh the excitement, opportunities and enhancements web-based research and communication brought to the craft. Certainly, much changed for the better. However there is a reason people fear change: it is nearly always accompanied by negative effects.
Among the many things that have changed since my school days is the ever diminishing (monetary) value of news. I heard from my university news professor just last week. He wrote: "Eventually... newspapers will figure out that they are no longer in the business of breaking news, but rather (a) providing citizens with data they need to answer their own questions and (b) providing tools and analysis".
The power of analysis is something information professionals have held in their arsenal for some time. Finding and disseminating information are not enough; sense-making is essential. A humans-only task? No longer: we are beset with innovators purporting to extract meaning algorithmically from data. Yet again, new tools force us to face change and question again how best we can deliver more value. The information assembly line may be increasingly automated, but the right pieces must be put into place for a viable product to come off the line.
The information industry has its share of disruptors - change in the form of innovation that helps create a new market and value network, and eventually goes on to disrupt an existing market and value network - including the dominance of search as the gateway to information and the do-it-yourself information market. Among these disrupters are companies leveraging others' content to (one hopes) add value and build a business model. One of these is Meltwater, which we analyse in-depth in our new FreePint Research Report: Insights on Meltwater. Meltwater's disruptive effect has been felt in the publishing and information industries alike; this is certainly one of the more interesting ongoing stories in the struggle for balance between contentious creators and content aggregators. Another would-be disruptor, with its sights set on a segment of the Factiva market, is news aggregator FirstRain. VIP subscribers can look forward to seeing a review of FirstRain with the August issue of VIP.
While it is natural to be concerned about the potential negative impact of disruptive forces, it is futile to resist. Our best approach is to meet it armed with awareness and invest in the continued development of our value given the inevitability of change.
Best regards,
Michelle Manafy,
Director of Content

My Favourite Tipples
By James Mullan
As the roles and organisations have worked in have changed I've noticed that what I'm reading and disseminating has changed quite significantly. I'm still very interested in Librarianship and Law Librarianship specifically but I also need to be aware of developments in my main area of work which is managing my organisations Intranet. To do this I subscribe to a number of RSS feeds and monitor a select number of websites for updates. But by far and away the sites I visit most often are the ones listed below:
- Twitter: By far and away my biggest source of news nowadays is Twitter. If you haven't joined yet, well, what you waiting for? If you have and you're looking for a tool to manage Twitter then Hootsuite is currently my favourite tool for managing my followers, feeds and searches.
- LinkedIn: I'm a huge fan of Linkedin and have recently delivered several presentations on how Linkedin should be more then just about making connections. LinkedIn Groups are particularly useful as are some of the features Linkedin hides away like LinkedIn Skills and Linkedin Answers.
- Picnik: A site that someone told me about years ago and which I still use to this day is Picnik. Picnik is a fantastic free picture editing site, which I would recommend to anyone who needs to edit a picture.
- Photofunia: If you're looking for a photo editing site that does things a bit differently, then you should definitely take a look at Photofunia.
- Savage Chickens: My final tipple is Savage Chickens which, while not quite an information resource, are quite valuable in their way. Savage Chickens are brilliant cartoons drawn by Doug Savage - on sticky notes!
James Mullan works for a commercial law firm where he manages their Intranet, Enterprise search tool and internal social media tools. James is a Chartered Librarian and is currently President-Elect of the British & Irish Association of Law Librarians (BIALL) James blogs at The Running Librarian and can be found on Twitter.

Our aim is to examine how the Cloud is benefiting organisations and the factors that impact on knowledge and information management as we know it.
The day will introduce seven innovative case studies from Thomson Reuters, ExLibris, Eduserv, Logica, Exstrinsica, Esri UK and EFM that illustrate how challenges have been overcome and how benefits have been realised. - [FreePint] The science of "must-have" content
If only there were a scientific formula, technical algorithm, or medical prescription for the information market. Instead, there is a seemingly endless tension between content sellers and buyers in which the former invests in content creation and delivery in the hope that the latter will find it so desirable that they shove each other aside, wallets in hand, trying to get hold of it. Too often, in fact, content buyers are actually having to take a surgical approach so that budget cuts don't puncture any vital information organs.

Tricks of the trade show: Making the most of your field research
By Judith Binder
FUMSI: Find
Industry trade shows and conferences can be so big that you just don't know where to start. But don't be put off; follow this advice from Judith Binder and capitalise on the wealth of business and market information that can be gleaned if you take the right approach. Make sure you plan how you will come away from the event with key competitive intelligence ... without giving too much away yourself!
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Industry conferences, trade shows and seminars can be the single best place to collect market and business information that can be developed into competitive intelligence. You can learn about customer needs, emerging technologies, government directions, competitor plans, how to compete in specific markets, and more at a fraction of the cost of traditional research methods. Making the most of intelligence gathering at an event requires planning and preparation. Working smart at the show requires focus and organisation. A set of Key Intelligence Topics (KITs) facilitates the identification and definition of intelligence needs.'

SharePoint and the law firm intranet
By Jennifer McNenly
FUMSI: Manage
A SharePoint 2007 bilingual intranet has enabled knowledge sharing and collaboration at law firm Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP as each staff member can create and comment on content. Jennifer McNenly explains how this works and looks at the improved features migration to SharePoint 2010 will bring.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Law firm Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP has a SharePoint 2007 bilingual intranet called Oslernet, which includes legal and administrative community team sites. All sites have content owners who are responsible for updating their own information, and everyone in the firm is considered a content creator and commentator via their ability to create news and events. The information architecture is a mix of task- and department-based information and pages are a mix of both custom and out-of-the- box web parts. Osler is currently in the process of migrating to SharePoint 2010 which has some useful functionality that is new or has been improved.'

VIP Magazine: Competitive Intelligence and the Value of Info Pros - A VIP Editorial
By Ian Smith
"Getting rid of librarians because everything is online = getting rid of accountants because everyone has a calculator on their desk."
- Stephen Abram, VP strategic partnerships & markets, Gale
Twitter exploded with this quote during this year's Special Libraries Association annual conference in Philadelphia, PA. Abram's comment obviously struck a chord with information professionals. Why? Simply put, information professionals (no matter what the speciality) must constantly substantiate their value to their organisations or clients.
When I started in the field of competitive intelligence 12 years ago, many of my former classmates and friends thought that they could do my job by easily typing keywords into Yahoo!, Excite or Hotbot. To dispel this notion, I had to explain to them that there was more to business information research than using an online research tool. Information professionals' unique value proposition lies within their capacity to know about specialised tools and to be a master of efficiency in obtaining information that is not on the free web. Thanks to publications such as VIP Magazine, professionals can be kept up to date on the latest sources of information that often remain unknown to individuals who just "Google it".
In this month's issue, readers will access details regarding Lexis Diligence and Euromonitor Passport. Both sources of information offer the competitive intelligence researcher access to data regarding risk, global and national market reports.
Heidi Longaberger's review provides insights regarding the various features and the types of search and content that users can gather with the Lexis Diligence database. Since one of the roles of a competitive intelligence researcher is to collect data pertaining to possible risks in a business environment, mastering Lexis Diligence should absolutely be on your "to do list". Putting aside some time to just experiment with this tool will do wonders when you are called upon to create country profiles where fraud and corruption are big issues.
For researchers who are seeking to expand their toolkit of consumer data sources, Jan Knight furnishes a comprehensive review of Euromonitor Passport. The review is very practical, easy to follow and valuable when you place yourself in front of the database's search interface. Such a read will no doubt save you time, especially when your deliverable may turn out to be a little bit more complex than expected. Again, I urge you to play with the tool to get comfortable with it.
After reading both reviews and the rest of the magazine, the notion that anyone can find anything they might need by typing a few words into a search engine is once again debunked. Information professionals will continue to bring value to colleagues and their respective organisations by simply accessing data where internet search engines are prohibited to go.
With the amount of content expanding on the web thanks to social media and what is being archived, the value of an information professional has never been greater. In fact, going forward, acquiring more information professionals is a wise move for any organisation that sees information as a strategic asset rather than a general commodity that anyone can access.
Ian Smith
Ian Smith is the competitive intelligence specialist and chief blogger at Intelegia (www.intelegia.com), a boutique consulting firm that assists organizations adopt social media marketing plans by executing integrated content strategies.

- Facebook for competitive analysis
Earlier this week at the AF Expo in San Francisco, sponsored by All Facebook, I looked forward to the session on "Competitive Analysis on Facebook" as a chance to glean the latest and greatest for professional researchers who may be looking for an edge via insights from social media channels. Unfortunately, and a propos of the marketing and technology professionals in the audience, the session was much more focused on tools for leveraging corporate Facebook pages than on hard core competitive analysis...

- SLA Conference 2011: A Focus on the discussion between content buyers and sellers
The SLA Conference 2011 took place this week in Philadelphia, which is known as The City of Brotherly Love. At this event, many wondered if there's much love lost between content buyers and their vendors.
Led by Barbara Hirsh and Stephanie Schubert, the Content Buying section of the Leadership & Management Division of SLA offered three sessions to explore the current challenges of buying and selling content (with thanks to the vendor partners for their support of the discussion around this topic, Dow Jones, FreePint, and BST America). All three sessions were very well attended, demonstrating a clear demand for guidance and discussion on content acquisition, as the economic cycle forces changes in content distribution and pricing models of sellers and in the budgets of buyers.

- Google's news archive project comes to a stop
The Google News Archive, an ambitious project originally launched in 2006 has been mothballed by its owners; that is to say, content is no longer being added to the archive. As reported by LiveWire in 2009 and 2010, Google's project was seen as the most comprehensive historical news archive on the web: the original plans were to scan and index up to 250 years' worth of newspapers' microfilm. Apparently the archive to date consists of around 60 million pages from 2,000 newspapers.

- Acquisition news: EBSCO acquires H.W. Wilson
EBSCO Publishing announced today that it has acquired The H.W. Wilson Company, in a move seen by industry observers as a gambit to incorporate Wilson's highly-regarded indexing services into EBSCO products to add value for its library reference customers. No details on the purchase price were released, and the official company press statement refers to a "merger". But with annual revenues of $40 million and 450 employees for Wilson vs. $2,400 million and 6,000 employees for EBSCO (figures from Hoovers.com), it's a clear case of a little fish getting swallowed.

- Thomson Reuters sells, buys
With an announcement on Tuesday that it is divesting itself of its Healthcare related data and analysis business, ThomsonReuters (TSX/NYSE: TRI) sent a strong message to its customers and competitors that it is concentrating its efforts on what it considers to be core franchises: the financial, legal and business markets. Prior to the announcement, the Healthcare business provided data, analytics and performance benchmarking solutions and services to companies, government agencies and healthcare professionals, to the tune of $450 million in revenue in 2010. That's a drop in the bucket of the company's $13.1 billion revenue that year, though it maintained the same operating margin of around 19% as the company as a whole.
