Heed the mobile call
You deserve to hear the truth. I am an anomaly in our high tech information set: I don't own or use a mobile phone. That was quite a face you just made. And did I hear an outright scoff? Well, I can't blame you. Given that, per Wikipedia, there are over 5 billion mobile phones in use and about 6.93 billion people worldwide, I am well in the minority. I'm even more so in the US, where there are about 303 million mobile phones in a population of about 301 million. And in the UK, mobile phones actually outnumber people with 77,750,000 in use for a population of 61,612,300.
So there you have it: I am one of the few in the information industry who muddles through sans phone. Now that we have the confession out of the way, let's move forward. I am a great fan - and avid user - of mobile technologies. A laptop was a massive productivity leap for me given the travel requirements of my job. An eReader eliminated the need to pack several books and magazines for a trip. And when I found I could stay in touch with the office, monitor my calendar, and participate in social media and email conversations effectively via a wee iPod Touch, I was not only pleased, but also relieved to be free of a shoulder-straining laptop bag.
Yet even the most diehard mobile user knows there are things easier done on a computer and some that are still impossible to achieve on a mobile device. With the entry of tablets into the market, that list continues to shrink. Though I still bring a laptop on the road, I can usually leave it at the hotel room. And, given my experience using a tablet so far, I think my laptop may soon lose its travel visa.
Clearly, I'm not alone in seeing that mobile has transcended text messaging and obnoxious commuter rail chatter and even gone well beyond out-off-office-tether. Mobile devices in a variety of sizes, shapes and operating systems are increasingly taking robust office and information experiences on the road in small - yet also increasingly usable - form factors. While the "oh wow" factor of smartphones and iPads piqued the interest of many an early adopter, the rapid proliferation of eReading devices and influx of tablets are broadening the appeal of information applications to go.
Despite the proliferation of mobile devices, our research - available in the FreePint Volume: Mobile Enterprise Markets and Barriers - has shown a remarkable reticence to deploy content to mobile devices at the enterprise level. Security, interoperability and device management were (and remain) among the valid concerns slowing enterprise mobile content deployment. However as we gear up for our next round of research into enterprise deployment of mobile information, we already see signs of increased momentum. I encourage you to register your interest in participating in our next round of research to contribute your expectations, concerns, insights (and even your personal mobile wish list) to better enable both content buyers and sellers to move smartly forward in the mobile information market.
Best regards,
Michelle Manafy,
Director of Content

My Favourite Tipples
By Sharon Simcox
I keep up to date on current trends and solutions by monitoring around 50+ websites and blogs, all usually based around web technologies, intranets, information management or SharePoint. I've gathered these sources over the past few years, usually by finding links within other blogs and trade bulletins/newsletters. These resources and the various LinkedIn groups I am a member of help me to continuously improve our intranet for the users in many different ways. Here are a few links that I find interesting and useful on a daily basis.
- Step Two and Column Two Blog: This is a treasure trove of intranet information, advice and guidance. I use this as a reference point when I am researching an intranet issue and I also subscribe to their blog to keep upto date on current intranet trends. We've also purchased some of the Step Two intranet books, as these are intranet team bibles of good practice and advice!
- Damn I wish I'd thought of that Blog: Andy Sernovitz produces his is a brilliant source of original marketing ideas and good/bad customer service. Some of the blog posts point out the smallest ways that you can improve customer service and relations, and increase new customer numbers, using simple techniques. Very interesting.
- Gerry McGovern/Giraffe Forum: This is a straightforward and clear website offering intranet advice from an industry expert.
- Globally Local and Locally Global: This blog, written by Jane McConnell is another excellent source of intranet advice and insight. We take part in McConnel's annual Digital Workplace Trends Report, and receive a copy of the report which is a valuable source of intranet trend information (this is used as evidence when requesting budgets and future intranet developments).
- Smashing Magazine: This website and blog focus on web design and user experience. I subscribe to the blog to keep current on the latest design trends and technologies available (HTML 5 etc). As an added plus, some of the designs shown are lovely to just look at!
Sharon Simcox is the Intranet Coordinator at Irwin Mitchell Solicitors. She has worked on intranets for the past 10 years, and has worked with SharePoint for the last 5 years. She is currently undertaking an eCommunications Foundation Degree online at the Sheffield College, and will complete this next year. Connect with Sharon on LinkedIn.

OrgIntel: Organisational intelligence for finding and influencing your stakeholders
By Scott Brown
FUMSI: Find
Ever felt that your organisation does not appreciate the value you provide as an information professional? Well, all you need to do is follow Scott Brown's very practical suggestions and carry out OrgIntel, This is all about finding the influencers and conversations in your organisation and then, coupled with a willingness to increase your visibility, you can get involved in the discussions and anticipate information needs.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Organisational intelligence, or "OrgIntel", is about finding, and actively pursuing, the key groups and stakeholders you, as information professionals, need to connect with in your organisation so that you can demonstrate the value of what you do. It's not quite stalking - but it's the next best thing. There are four components of the concept of OrgIntel: searching for clues; finding the pulse; beyond the organisation chart; and visibility and openness. Through practising OrgIntel, and participating in the discussions in our organisations, we raise our visibility, become more closely aligned to our organisations' true needs, and open ourselves up to addressing those needs more actively.'

Using the golden information thread: Some lessons from the Utilities sector for managing risk, making decisions and providing governance.
By Edward Ptolomey
FUMSI: Use
Projects often involve third parties which inevitably makes information management more complicated, particularly when it comes to ensuring there is only "one version of the truth". Edward Ptolomey shows how a partnership approach in the utilities sector reduced duplication of information and helped risk management.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Often it is third party organisations that hold the key information on the product or service which is being delivered. But, as a client, this information is critical to enable you to develop as a business and ensure that you are complying with quality standards, health & safety, legislation and governance. To obtain and use this critical information you can either demand it is given to you as part of the contract arrangement or you can embrace a partnership approach. Partnership creates a platform for involving the third party in creating and exploring common information requirements that enable workflow. This will enable there to be "one version of the truth".'

VIP Magazine: On the Horizon
VIP Magazine features VIP Horizon, a brief summary of important news in the information industry, interpreted to help information managers communicate upward regarding strategy, risk management and planning for change.
The most recent issue of VIP (No. 91) features the following in VIP Horizon:
Offshoring finance and accounting activities now constitutes an unacceptable risk for many senior executives in large British and American companies, findings from the analyst Ovum show. Trading cost for quality is one of the issues - where India, for example, produces some of the lowest priced accounting staff in the world but also scores lowest on satisfaction.
Which means that online information providers such as LexisNexis and Thomson Reuters may have got their timing right in their continuing development of cost saving software-based workflow solutions - principally for the legal, tax and accountancy field but also in financial services such as insurance.

Figures from Verizon show that the number of records compromised by data security breaches may have dropped dramatically in 2010, but the number of separate attacks was the highest to date. Yet only 3% of the breaches were considered unavoidable without difficult or expensive corrective action.
Meanwhile a Frost & Sullivan report shows that, although the growing use of mobile devices can compromise security, technological issues are only part of the story. Security policies and user education are lagging too, and some security professionals are resisting adopting such technologies even though they are widely embraced by business and end users.

Recent large scale cloud computing security issues involving Amazon and Sony are unlikely to result in a backlash against cloud-based services, figures from the Cloud Industry Forum suggest. Nevertheless the analyst Gartner warns that cloud-enabled outsourcing is still "immature and fraught with potential hazards".
Respondents to the Forum's survey did have some concerns about the Cloud, chief among which were issues of data security, privacy and sovereignty. But probably most significant of all was the finding that over two thirds of cloud migration decisions were taken by the head of IT, compared with just a quarter taken by the boss.

Reuters' release of its second video product within a year incidentally emphasises the growing importance of tablet devices within business. Its Livestream 24/7 video feed is designed to make it easier for smaller publishers to compete with services like CNN.com and MSNBC - and the earlier Insider video on demand service aimed to bring broadcast standard financial video programming to investment professionals.
As Reuters explains, video content is compatible with mobile devices including tablet technology. Since the analyst Forrester estimates that tablet sales will total 195 million between 2010 and 2015, bringing video capability to niche publishers looks like good sense.

With social media now too embedded in knowledge work to be ignored, guidance on their safe use is becoming essential. Guidelines issued by top news organisations such as Reuters, the Financial Times or, most recently, Bloomberg, provide pretty good models.
Although designed for journalists, advice like being sceptical of any information forwarded on a social network, and thinking carefully about retweeting (because it implies endorsement of the original tweet) is of value in any organisation. So too are their warnings to corporate spokespeople who may be tempted to break company news on Twitter before getting an official press release authorised.

- Content needs context
I am having an information crisis this week - I know it is only Tuesday - but it makes me wonder if we are losing the basics about information and what makes it so valuable. My main gripe is around the lack of context especially in the use of social media - lack of context causes information to float in a vacuum and as such is almost meaningless...

- Community-centric reading and library eBooks
Fast making the rounds in the library community is marketing guru Seth Godin's "The future of the library" blog post. He makes an assertion that is at once heartening and troubling: kids today "need a librarian more than ever (to figure out creative ways to find and use data). They need a library not at all". He goes on to point out that eReaders make obsolete the library's role as "warehouse for dead books" and that "librarians that are arguing and lobbying for clever eBook lending solutions are completely missing the point".

- Mobile devices can shorten your home life
Use of mobile devices is growing by leaps and bounds, and reluctant IT and information managers are going to have to adapt sooner or later to suit the plethora of new gadgets that their users are increasingly going to own. But what if those same devices add three weeks to your working year?

- Consuming news on your own terms
There is an argument to be made that search as the dominant access vehicle to information on the internet has actually transformed how we expect to access information everywhere. Readers once routinely subscribed to trusted information sources - newspapers, journals, magazines, even encyclopaedias. People turned to the one(s) they deemed most trustworthy for the answers sought.

- Order out of chaos - it's not just LinkedIn
All eyes in business may be on LinkedIn's monster share offering at the moment - but this gargantuan social network for suits is merely the most high profile exemplar of business's comprehensive embrace of social and collaborative media. Parallel but less spectacular developments in companies like Salesforce, Northern Light and newcomer Avos are no less worthy of attention.
