Information resources that work with you
Overheard last week at the 2011 SLA Annual Conference: "One vendor I've worked with for years just came to me and arbitrarily demanded a 40% increase". Aberrant behaviour? Perhaps. But not unique. A charmingly feisty member of SLA's Leadership and Management Division echoed the occurrence when she noted she had recently faced a seemingly capricious price increase of 30%. At a time when the information industry is just starting to see tender shoots of economic recovery pushing up, it is shocking to hear that any information purveyors would approach customer relationships in such a fashion.
Certainly, many vendors held prices steady over the past two years and many demonstrated willingness to work with customers on pricing in order to hang on to them. This strategy seems particularly wise: in our world, very little is truly irreplaceable. Another conference attendee pointed out: "Once we've learned to live without something, there's no going back". Regardless of reductions, info pros will find a way to get the work done.
The SLA 2011 Annual Conference & INFO-EXPO demonstrated the breadth of information needs and tools available, as well as insights into the resourcefulness of info pros who put them to work. We at FreePint respect -- and endeavour to reflect -- the range of the information users we serve and are pleased to continue to expand the tools we provide to meet your needs. Our latest effort is our new series of DocuTicker Reports. This series provides an efficient and affordable way to quickly amass topic-specific collections of grey literature resources.
The grey literature provides a deep well of valuable content from respected and trustworthy sources -- such as government agencies, non-profits, think tanks, and educational institutions -- available for free online. The trouble is that these worthy sources can be time-consuming to locate, much less evaluate. Since 2004, we've built up the content in the DocuBase, where our editorial team posts citations to the grey literature they find and evaluate on the web. Now we've taken it a step further, by curating collections that jump start research on topics such as the Chinese economy, the environment & sustainability, and the internet & society.
This week, we introduced subscription pricing for these reports because we believe that enabling institutions to amass topic-specific collections of high quality free sources will help provide a solid foundation for research in these areas. However, another thing we believe is that telling customers what they want is beyond "arbitrary" ... it becomes antagonistic and simply goes against our grain. Thus, we seek your feedback as we develop the DocuTicker Reports series. My Favourite Tipples

Our small firm, Dysart & Jones Associates, is incredibly busy and I'm often working in airports and hotel rooms. Google Reader tracks websites for me, and I can check it from my BlackBerry, iPad or computer quickly and easily. The sites I check every day, even days off are:
- Harvard Business Review Management Tip of the Day: This is a must for me, and, I encourage everyone to make it a must for them. The actual website has highlights of best practices and articles from Harvard's blogs by some of the top thought-leaders and researchers of organizational practices. I also subscribe to the email version which arrives early each morning with a capsule comment on a leadership issue.
- Daily Dose of Imagery: is "a simple view" of Sam Javanrouh's day as seen through his camera lens. Art, particularly the art of life, which is what photographs are, adds to our perspective and enriches our thinking. I find looking at Sam's photo of the day often gives me pause - and insights.
- Stephen's Lighthouse: What can I say about Stephen Abram's website that hasn't been said? If you are in the library profession or information industry you have to pay attention to Stephen's writings and discussions. Whether you like what he's saying or not, his intelligent and informed insights are gold - pure gold.
- Trendwatching.com: This site does just what the name suggests - it watches and reports on trends, particularly societal and consumer trends. Since we do a considerable amount of planning with libraries in all sectors, we need to be current with the latest trends, and this site supplies that currency for me.
- ReadWriteWeb: covers emerging technology trends and, as its home page so rightly says it "articulates what's next in technology and what it means for society at large." It makes me think. And in our profession, we need to think about "what DOES this mean for libraries?"
Rebecca Jones is managing partner with Dysart & Jones Associates. She is former Director of continuing education at University of Toronto's iSchool, and is an instructor & Advisory Board member. Early in her career, she worked for 14 years in large corporations in managerial roles in libraries, records management, human resources and IT. Her kids say she is a "confused librarian" since most of her work is facilitating for a broad range of organizations in academic, public, non-profit and corporate sectors, on organizational design, roles, decision-making, conflict management, planning and - having some fun. She's a Fellow of the Special Libraries Assoc., and pitches in where and how she can make a difference.

How can info pros help users to find information when both organisations and information are evolving and becoming more complex? Jennifer Smith is convinced that adopting a faceted system, which assigns types and attributes to information, is the key and describes the ONEIS system which a number of information-rich organisations have successfully implemented.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Using a faceted approach, you describe each piece of information by its different facets (aspects or characteristics). By comparison, using a classification approach you fit each piece of information into the closest match in a predefined taxonomy or file plan. Critically, information is useful to different people for different reasons. The faceted, or descriptive, approach enables it to be retrieved by any of its different characteristics.'

Social media have changed news gathering not only for individuals but for venerable institutions like BBC World Service. Programmes and presenters can now interact with their audiences in a more immediate way and, via Twitter, audiences can be involved in history as it unfolds through tweets from reporters on the spot. Abigail Sawyer describes the impact of Twitter on BBC World Service.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'There is no doubt that social media have changed the way the modern newsroom works, but they have done more than that. They have changed how programmes, presenters and language services interact with their audience. Now we are listeners, too. BBC World Service broadcasts news and current affairs in English and 26 other languages on radio and online. All language services have Twitter accounts, some manually updated, others acting as feeds of content placed on their websites. This is matched by accounts belonging to individual programmes and members of staff.'

China-related information needs

There's no mistaking the excitement surrounding the economic opportunity China represents. Companies want to sell goods and services in China, manufacture in China, partner with Chinese firms, bring Chinese data to other markets ... with over 1.3 billion people (and an online population of 477 million), the upside potential of China-related initiatives is hard to resist.
A host of data providers offer up products and resources to help organisations get the information they need to ground these initiatives in intelligence. This month's VIP reviews of CEIC China and EMIS China from ISI Emerging Markets and China Connect from Bureau van Dijk Electronic Publishing compete with a wide range of offerings from publishers of all sizes, as well as government data and myriad consultants offering to guide organisations in their approach.
But what do organisations want and need when it comes to information by, for and about China? A big country, an enormous market and a complex business environment, China defies a one-size-fits-all approach to data identification, collection and analysis. When considering the opportunities presented here, there are many things to consider, such as: do organisations need market data by city, region, or other geographic denominator?; macroeconomic indicators?; deep archives or near real-time information?; financial and credit information on potential partners ... or on customers?; or all of the above? And when in the business development cycle is quality information most critical?
These are some of the questions that inspired the current FreePint Research: Survey on Information from and about China. This project attempts to create a better understanding of what types of information companies consider to be strategic when they work towards their ambitions relating to China. The project is sponsored in part by Bureau van Dijk, Informa Business Information, and ISI Emerging Markets, each of which has contributed useful insight into customer wants and needs.
At the same time, sponsors bring their particular perspective to the table. For example, Informa Business Information has recently finalised the details of a partnership with a Chinese company that provides data on health care research and clinical information. With access to this data, Informa needs more insight as to how this information can be as strategic and valuable as possible to customers.
A question on the minds of both buyers and sellers of China-related information is the validity of data. Since the market and economy are so enormous, it is difficult to determine how much information is enough to create a clear and accurate picture of business opportunity, market needs or competitive concerns. What is a relevant sample in a market of 1.3 billion consumers? Even dividing the country by city or region results in potential pools of almost unimaginable sizes.
At the same time, many non-Chinese buyers of China-related information indicate concerns over the trustworthiness of the data. Is information published by the Chinese government fully trustworthy? How can a non-Chinese firm find and vet a trustworthy Chinese partner firm?
FreePint Research: Survey on Information from and about China will collect information on the following, among other things:
- The degree to which companies pay for information from and about China versus relying on non-paid sources.
- The types of information that are most important, such as:
- Chinese government-published information
- NGO-published information
- Business news
- Financial information
- Macroeconomic data
- Market and customer data
- Competitive information
- Business environment news and analysis
- Local information
- Research papers
- Clinical studies
- Literature reviews
- Abstracts of non-translated information.
- The degree to which China-related needs and/or budgets have changed recently.
- Specific needs for news content, STM (scientific, technical, medical) content, economic content or company information content.
The survey is not intended to be a comprehensive study of China-related information needs but rather a first step in establishing a foundation for understanding the role of China-related information in decision-making. In addition to survey data, the completed report (to be published in July 2011) will include additional insight from interviews with information managers who support information acquisition.

- Researchers can now access IEEE content on Pubget
Pubget, the search engine for life science PDFs has announced an agreement with IEEE, the world's largest technical professional association. The agreement, part of Pubget's Publisher Partnership Program enables Pubget to index IEEE's content from the past decade, which includes leading journals, transactions, letters, and magazines in electrical engineering, computing, biotechnology, telecommunications, power and energy, among others.
