Exploring China information

While the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has made a lot of headlines of late for (ahem) other reasons, it was mentioned in the Economist in May in its traditional financial context. The Economist reports that for the past year or two, according to the IMF, the big economies have experienced a "multi-speed" recovery. "The recovery has resembled third world traffic, where juggernauts and rickshaws, cars and cycles ply the same lanes at different speeds, often getting in each other's way." However, the Economist reports that, "for the past month or two, this traffic has slowed in unison." This points out the increasingly intertwined economic destinies for global economic leaders. However, the interrelated impact of these economies came into even sharper focus when HSBC's preliminary estimate for Chinese manufacturing fell just over a week ago, causing a remarkably strong reaction worldwide.

Exploring China informationCertainly, there's been much attention paid to the economic opportunities presented by China and fellow BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China). As reported in the Independent last week, PricewaterhouseCoopers predicts that China is on course to be the worlds biggest banking market within 15 years and PwC's chief economist said, "With populations of well over a billion each, access to markets like China and India is critical."

Critical indeed. And it seems as if individuals and organisations everywhere are investigating the opportunities presented by the rapid growth of the Chinese economy. We are currently researching information needs for this particular market here at FreePint and invite you to participate in FreePint Research: Survey on Information From and About China. In it, we are exploring current and future interest in China, preference for information sources, specific areas of information needs, and more. This brief survey will help shape the future of information resources in this area, so join in to help ensure that the information you need to understand how to wisely capitalise on the increasing opportunities presented by the growth of China as a dominant global economic force.

Given the increasing interest in China, we are investigating information resources in this area in other ways as well: We provide an overview of many existing free sources for information on China in our DocuTicker Report: DocuTips on the Chinese economy and consumers. Also, June's VIP will feature in-depth reviews of BvD's China Connect and ISI Emerging Markets' EMIS China and CEIC China offerings. VIP subscribers will see their copies on 8 June, or you can stop by the FreePint table (No. 8) at the SLA Annual Conference in Philadelphia next week for a sneak peek at these reports.

According to Fortune, China's plan to launch nearly an IPO a day through 2015 is creating a phenomenal amount of wealth, and the world's top banks are scrambling to capture it. And even though the rocketing economic growth in China shows some signs of slowing, Chinese household wealth will still grow 14% a year for the foreseeable future, according to the May 2011 report "Global Wealth 2011" from the Boston Consulting Group.

Certainly, this is a market we are all exploring with ever increasing interest. Please participate in our survey on China-related information, and we can work together to shape the direction information resources take so that they better guide your business in the direction it needs to go.

Best regards,
Michelle Manafy,

 My Favourite Tipples

Joe MurphyBy Joe Murphy

Timeliness is key for me as a library professional and as a trend spotter. I spend my days with an ear to the tech news and a finger on the pulse of real time developments. Here are some of my favourite resources:

  • Flipboard: A "personalized social magazine" iPad application for viewing and engaging customized content streams for news or social networks on a visual interface.

  • Twitter lists: these allow me to efficiently catch real time info from the most important news accounts and relevant groupings for current awareness. I have several lists of librarians to share.

  • Stitcher mobile app: a great tool that streams favourite podcasts without having to download or synch.

  • Podcasts/vodcasts: Some of the Podcasts/vodcasts I listen to regularly on Stitcher (and otherwise) include Bageltechnews, which is an entertaining daily tech news podcast out of the UK that goes beyond my comfort zone and teaches me about techs/trends outside of my normal sphere of attention; TechCrunch Founder Stories for advice from entrepreneurs and inside views on hot startups, and Techstuff, in-depth weekly podcast from HowStuffWorks that explores details of important techs.

  • Technology news apps: I use a variety of Technology news apps including Mashable, AllThingsD, and the tech sections of major news sources from AP to CNN, and their push notifications to stay current.

Joe Murphy is a Librarian at Yale University and an influential innovator. His professional work focuses on technology trends and assisting information stakeholders meet the ever changing landscape. • [FreePint] Research opportunity for student/grad

Hi - FreePint is looking for a research intern to support a new online offering. This is a great opportunity for someone to gain experience and understanding of the major and niche vendors in the industry.

    This person will:
Research and validate company and main information product/service lines
    Write brief descriptions

We'll provide initial lists and ongoing support.

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to fast-track their knowledge acquisition of who's who in the information world.

I'm particularly happy to work with someone who wants to turn the project into something they can apply to their studies - for example, a market landscape overview of some segment of the industry.

If you're interested, email a CV to robin.neidorf@freepint.com. Coming to SLA in Philadelphia? Visit us at Table No. 8.

    Thanks--
    Robin Neidorf

LinkedIn: An awesome information resource for building your reputation, your connections and your knowledge

Elisabeth GoodmanBy Elisabeth Goodman
FUMSI: Find

From its recruitment tool origins, LinkedIn has grown into a vital networking tool for companies as well as individuals. Among its many features, Groups allow you to keep on top of the latest developments while making new contacts, and LinkedIn Today aggregates news shared on LinkedIn and Twitter. Elisabeth Goodman shows why individuals and companies alike should embrace LinkedIn.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'LinkedIn is an increasingly useful source of information on individuals and the organisations in which they work. Most people are aware of the ability to develop their own profile on LinkedIn: something akin to an online resume. Less well known is that companies can now develop their own detailed profile on LinkedIn, present their products and services with testimonials from clients, advertise positions available and gain statistics on who is viewing their profile. Individuals wanting to find out about a company can therefore gain additional insights about the organisation and the people who work there to complement more traditional sources.'

Archiving social media content/context - more questions than answers?

Jennifer JonesBy Jennifer Jones
FUMSI: Use

As Twitter does not provide a long term storage solution for tweets this leaves researchers with a dilemma. How should tweets be stored so that both the content and the context are retained, and the resource is searchable? Jennifer Jones looks at the possibilities but concludes that there are still more questions than answers.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Twitter only stores and around five days. There are solutions, such as the Twitter archiver TwapperKeeper which allows for the external capture of tweets via a spreadsheet. However, after recent reports of closure and then subsequent reopening of the ability to export and download tweets from Twitter's API, many discussions have been sparked around the long lasting alternatives for storing Twitter data for later use. It is not simply a case of collecting and managing data, but instead it's about trying to seek and explore the best method in which to maintain context before it crumbles away. Similarly, there is no catch-up solution, nor are these ideas exhaustive in their approach.'

VIP issue 91VIP Magazine: Investigating Information Resources on China - A VIP Editorial

By Benjamin B. Sargent

It seems like every few weeks now that a client or the media shows up in my office (or virtually at my web desk) asking a question about trends or events in China that requires a detailed response. Thankfully, data sources for the People's Republic of China – once hard to find and difficult to use – have come a long way in recent years. However the volume and variety of information is a challenge to track. In a famous Chinese folk tale five Chinese brothers each possess a unique talent that allows them to accomplish great feats. I feel like the one who must swallow the ocean – an ocean of data, in this case.

With its population topping 1.3 billion, PRC data comes from more than 20 provinces, over two dozen if you count Beijing, Shanghai and two other "shi" or municipalities. In my line of work we often deal with web and audience data. The challenge is not to make assumptions about how it might be similar or different from other regions, or the same region a few years back or a few years ahead. Literacy now exceeds 90% in China and government data puts the total number of internet users at 457 million as of January 2011, up 19.1% in the past year. The number of Chinese speakers online in China has outpaced the total number of native English speakers online from all countries. But PRC technology adoption follows a different path from in the West, with two-thirds of its online consumers accessing internet services also or exclusively via mobile devices. Nine out of 10 digital consumers communicate on instant messaging compared with only half that use email. Solid data sources help researchers understand how and why things are different.

While English language data sources covering China continue to improve, the need also grows daily. This issue of VIP takes the pulse of the information industry in China. Contributing editor Penny Crossland of CH Business Research introduces us to two distinct services from ISI Emerging Markets, the CEIC China Premium Database and EMIS China. Building on her expertise in investigative research and market intelligence, she shows how these products combine government reporting and news sources. Export Development Canada's Senior Librarian Perrin Kerravala reviews a new source from Bureau van Dijk (BvD), China Connect, that offers a startling depth of insider and actionable data for companies looking to enter the market through acquisition or participate in M&A services (non-disclosure agreement (NDA) required). This information source draws on data and insight from BCMS International, an M&A advisory firm active in China and worldwide.

If China as a country continues to challenge my data-drinking capabilities, it helps to know where to find the data when it's needed. The sources reviewed in this issue should be close at hand when the next person working on a China project walks up to your virtual desk and asks for help.
