By Robin Neidorf

Warmest wishes to you for a happy and successful 2011Happy New Year from FreePint. Back in November, we announced the addition of Michelle Manafy to our leadership team as Director of Content. She started this week, and from London, Connecticut and Minnesota, new ideas are already emerging.

Michelle ManafyFrom FreePint's Director of Content:

There's a lot to get familiar with, since so much content is published each month across the FreePint Family. However, one of my first objectives is to learn as much as I can, as quickly as I can, about our readers. What are your most pressing issues? What internal challenges get between you and the full value of information in your organisation? What are the trends, technologies, tools, and resources you need to learn more about? And most importantly: How can FreePint help?

"Email me at michelle.manafy@freepint.com with your ideas and suggestions, complete our survey on topics for 2011, share a suggestion online, or post a response to the FreePint Bar when we announce publications. I'm also on Twitter @michellemanafy if you'd like to follow me or reach out to me there."

-- Michelle Manafy, FreePint's Director of Content, Connecticut

Robin NeidorfFrom FreePint's Director of Research:

"Research is my passion, so my new role as Director of Research is incredibly exciting. Over the past 2 years, FreePint has already published important studies on copyright, mobile content, news needs and preferences, and more -- and the calendar for 2011 is shaping up nicely. Register your interest in participating in research surveys, and I'll notify you when new studies are starting.

"But FreePint Research offers more than the valuable benchmarking and industry reports we publish. Tap our expertise in product evaluation, information practice and the market for information products and services to commission custom work. Email me at robin.neidorf@freepint.com or complete the RFP online for further information."

-- Robin Neidorf, FreePint's Director of Research, Minnesota

William HannFrom FreePint's Managing Director:

"We begin this New Year with a renewed emphasis on what matters most in any business: the people that make it a success. Certainly, here at FreePint, it is our contributors and editors who help us stay closely attuned to the issues that matter most to our readers and enable us to keep pace with this rapidly evolving industry.

"However, we are privileged in that our community extends well beyond our staff to include our valued readership. I would like to invite you not only to send us ideas for content and coverage, but to contribute case studies or even join us as a product reviewer. Become a contributor to share your expertise, and ask questions about information-related projects at the FUMSI Forum. As ever, we value your insights, input and continued support, and I welcome your feedback by email to me at william.hann@freepint.com or through our Suggestion Box".

-- William Hann, FreePint's Managing Director, London

With all good wishes for success in 2011 -- Michelle, Robin, and William

 My Favourite Tipples

Heather HeddenBy Heather Hedden

Taxonomist Tipples

As a consultant and trainer in the field of taxonomies, people have often asked me what resources I would recommend for doing taxonomy work. There are various useful sites, including blogs, the collected presentations and articles of taxonomy consultancies, professional organization sites, and sites that are collections of links to publicly accessible taxonomy examples. Following are some resources that cover all the basics of taxonomies for those, by accident or not, find themselves working as taxonomists.

  • ANSI/NISO Z39.19 Guidelines for the Construction, Format, and Management of Monolingual Controlled Vocabularies: This is the only freely accessible standard (technically a "guideline", not a "standard") for creating taxonomies, thesauri, or controlled vocabularies, and closely matches ISO 2788. If you have any questions on best practices for nitty gritty details of creating taxonomies, this is where to turn.

  • Taxonomy Warehouse: Perhaps you want to license a taxonomy instead of creating one from scratch. At the very least, it is a good idea to look at other taxonomies in the subject area, if yours is anything other than a specific enterprise taxonomy. Taxonomy Warehouse includes both taxonomies for sale and those for free license. If the license permits it, modifying and/or extracting from an existing taxonomy might be the way to go.

  • American Society for Indexing - Online Thesauri and Authority Files: Although there is some overlap with Taxonomy Warehouse, what makes this site different is that it links to live taxonomies and thesauri on the web that you can browse and search. These online taxonomies thus can be both sources of terms and relationships and models of taxonomy functionalities and user interfaces. There are few other resources like this, such as Queensland University of Technology thesaurus sites

  • SLA Taxonomy Division: Probably the closest thing to a professional association for taxonomists is this subgroup of the SLA (Special Libraries Association). You don't need to be a librarian to join. This site, parts of which are restricted to members, includes various resources plus a means of networking with other taxonomists.

  • The Accidental Taxonomist website links: As a companion to my book, The Accidental Taxonomist, I have created a website that includes all URLs mentioned throughout the book, and I keep the hyperlinks up to date. In addition to links to many more resources than presented here, this site includes links to specific example taxonomies, taxonomy blogs, and numerous software vendors.

Heather Hedden is a taxonomy consultant and trainer through her business, Hedden Information Management outside of Boston, and is the author of The Accidental Taxonomist. (Information Today Inc., 2010) She previously worked as the taxonomy manager for enterprise taxonomies and document management at First Wind, as the information taxonomist for the enterprise search engine vendor Viziant, and as a senior vocabulary editor supporting indexing for the library database vendor Gale. Heather teaches online workshops on taxonomy creation through the continuing education program of Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science and for groups independently.

Search engines revisited

Africa S. HandsBy Africa S. Hands
FUMSI: Find

Does the fact that Google is now a verb make it a better search engine than Yahoo! and Bing? Africa S Hands compares the search features and other services provided by the three search engines, and concludes that, although it is a case of 'horses for courses', Bing and Yahoo! still lag behind in some areas.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'While performing similar tasks, Google, Yahoo! And Bing offer different search experiences, search results pages and filtering options, choices for personalisation and resources for business professionals. But each is sure to have its followers whether for its filtering options, ability to search quickly for information using particular content partners, or its page preview feature.'

Information skills for art and design: The InfosmART project at the Glasgow School of Art Library

Duncan ChappellBy Duncan Chappell
FUMSI: Use

For those who think in a visual way, such as art and design students, navigating the text-based world of information can be daunting, so the Glasgow School of Art decided to develop some online modules to teach information skills. Duncan Chappell explains the background to the InfosmART project and the many benefits arising from it.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'InfosmART is a portfolio of online learning modules in information and research skills specifically designed for the Glasgow School of Art's learning, teaching and research communities. For many art and design students, information skills and aptitudes do not come as second nature so, with the ability to undertake self-directed research being an increasingly important skill in the knowledge economy, InfosmART was developed to equip all students with the transferable information skills that are attractive to employers in an increasingly competitive marketplace.'

VIP issue 85VIP Magazine

On the VIP Horizon

VIP Magazine features VIP Horizon, a brief summary of important news in the information industry, interpreted to help information managers communicate upward regarding strategy, risk management and planning for change.

The most recent issue of VIP (No. 85) includes the following in VIP Horizon:

New employees will increasingly reject email and the highly structured applications that have supported collaboration in the past, according to a report from the IT analyst Gartner. But as corporate communications embrace social media instead, the risk of getting into trouble with the courts becomes ever greater.

A new report from professional services firm PwC finds some courts handing out stiff penalties to companies that can't produce the required information and documents in litigation. It predicts the emergence of a new in-house corporate function with responsibilities for data creation, storage and retrieval - most likely under the aegis of the Chief Information Officer.

Solutions touted by social networking vendors to business can facilitate effective collaboration - but also risk adding to message overload. Endorsement is another solution that social media providers promote - but such is the viral nature of the medium that it can spread negative comment as easily as positive.

Even though use of social media presents both opportunities and threats to businesses, analyst Gartner believes that they are still insufficiently prepared to deal with it. It claims that, in the period up to 2015, 80% of organisations will 'lack a coherent approach for dealing with information from the collective'.

http://www.vivavip.com/go/e31174

* * *

Low executive interest, lack of staffing and perceived irrelevance means that business-to-business marketing teams aren't using social media as effectively as their business-to-consumer counterparts - even though they're relying on it more. According to the Mashable blog, 52% of B2C firms are using it to engage with customers on a daily basis, compared to only 32% of the B2B firms.

Marketing analyst Forrester predicts that B2B spending on interactive marketing will double in the next five years. But disruption specialist the Altimeter Group warns that social media strategists are going to have to move from reactive to proactive mode in response.

http://www.vivavip.com/go/e31224

Although nearly three quarters of Europe's most successful and influential business leaders now regularly obtain media content online, 95% still utilise print on a daily basis, according to a survey from pollster Ipsos MORI. This ties in with recent observations from two separate analyst surveys that business-to-business publishers need to combine print, online and events as they emerge from a tough few years.

But the increasing use of professional blogs in the enterprise adds a further disruptive element to the mix. A new report from FreePint indicates that blogs are starting to cross the line from 'new' to 'standard' media.

http://www.vivavip.com/go/e31442

* * *

Only a minority of companies involve risk functions in key business decisions, even though the incentive to get it right has never been greater, says a report from the Economist Intelligence Unit. And when it comes to the specific risks associated with financial investment, the turmoil within the credit reporting industry continues.

Established companies such as Moody's or Standard & Poor's are launching new products or restructuring in response to their perceived role in the financial meltdown. Meanwhile new arrivals like Bloomberg or, more recently, Meredith Whitney Advisory Group, threaten to disrupt what has hitherto been a fairly closed industry.
