Editorial
By Robin Neidorf
We've recently begun offering volumes of reports for purchase, including the most recently released FUMSI Essential Collection for Managing Information. This, along with a volume on finding information and another on social media for media for business, can be found in the FreePint Shop.
These volumes collect the hard-earned practical wisdom of a dozen or experts, and provide it to you at a discount. How much wisdom?
Consider what our contributors provide every month:
Tap 90 years of experience in VIP
While editing a recent feature article for VIP Magazine, I was struck by the value of what I held in my hands. Our contributor had distilled 6 years of experience on competitive intelligence tools into 1500 well-written words.
The same issue included two VIP Reports on Products, each written by an information professional with more than 8 years' experience, and each report representing more than 15 hours of focused research.
News analysis in VIP Magazine feeds off the VIP LiveWire, written by 5 contributing editors with between 10 and 25 years' experience apiece.
Total experience packaged in VIP: 90 years
Benefit from 150 years of experience in FUMSI
Next I looked over the fresh collection of FUMSI articles: 4 articles, plus 4 editorials multiplies out to nearly 100 years' worth of information expertise.
One of our contributing editors also assembled one of our FUMSI Reports entitled Folio on Value - Quality, not Quantity -- a collection of 5 (or more) articles on a specific topic, plus editorial commentary and recommendations. This report on its own represents another 50 years of experience.
Total experience packaged in FUMSI: 150 years
Harvest 32 years of experience in ResourceShelf
We launched ResourceBlog in September, moving the content that ResourceShelf has published over the years into a new format to add functionality and organise the collection of web-based resources to support business research. Founding editor Gary Price, with his 20 years in the field, continues to share resources at a truly astounding rate (329 postings in the month of September), ably aided by senior editor Shirl Kennedy.
Total experience packaged in ResourceShelf: 32 years
Incorporate 40 years of experience in DocuTicker
Also launched in September is the DocuBase, offering researchers a unique collection of abstracts from full-text, free PDF reports available on the web, published by government agencies, research institutes, NGOs and other public interest organisations. Under the leadership of Shirl Kennedy and Gary Price, and with the UK-based assistance of Adrian Janes, the database added 336 records in the month of September.
Total experience packaged in DocuTicker: 40 years
Ready for the final tally?
Across the FreePint Family, you can tap into the knowledge generated by over 300 years of information-intensive work. Every month. In a variety of formats. Via annual subscriptions or one-off purchases or in many cases at no cost whatsoever.
The depth and breadth of experience provided by FreePint contributors over the years is both humbling and exciting. Collectively, FreePint contributors represent a range of expertise that, I'd venture to say, is unmatched. And exciting things happen when all that talent is brought together.
It gets even more exciting when YOU tell us what else you want from that talent pool. What products should we review in VIP? What problems are on your desk that FUMSI articles can help you resolve? What value-added packages can we assemble to put this expertise in your hands at the right price?
Take 5 minutes to complete this brief survey on topics and formats we're considering for 2011. If you have a specific suggestion, contact us -- we are limited only by imagination, certainly not by experience!

My Favourite Tipples
Submit your list of up to five favourite tipples to support@freepint.com for publication with your byline and photo in the FreePint Newsletter. Have a single tip to share? Post it to the FUMSI Forum.
By Shirl Kennedy
DocuTicker relaunched last month, pulling tens of thousands of report citations into a database format, and we've enjoyed watching usage explode. We rely on countless 'fishing holes' to find quality resources, and we are always grateful for links, nudges in the right direction and questions that force us to dig deeper.
Turnabout is fair play: Here's a quick look at only a small number of those blogs that have cited DocuTicker:
- The Journalist's Toolbox by the Society for Professional Journalists is more like a treasure chest of great resources.
- The Public Health InfoLinks list maintained by the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University is a great collection of field-specific, general-interest and alternative media resources on health and healthcare.
- Social Capital Review comments primarily on the region of King County, Washington, but its Public Data Ferret provides links to other resources.
- Government Info Pro is published by LexisNexis publishes news and analysis of what's happening in the world of U.S. federal government information.
- If you've ever followed a DocuTicker link, only to find that 'this page is not found', submit it to the Lost Docs Blog. Users submit information about U.S. federal government reports they can no longer find on the web.
Shirl Kennedy is the senior editor for DocuTicker and ResourceShelf.

- [FreePint] Sources and Resources
We recently hired another account manager -- welcome, Ann Marie! In preparing her training, we were surprised at the number of different information sources we're managing every day -- a full dozen before we'd even gotten to external information! That's 12 different sources, just for internal information management and collaboration. Granted, not all of these are heavily used, but all are part of our working day. This core toolkit of sources combines free, fee and purpose-built tools, some cloud-based, some on our own servers, some on our individual hard-drives. The diversity is, I'd wager, common to many organisations.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Finding Your Information
By Lorene Kennard
FUMSI: Find
No matter how much training and experience an information professional has, luck often plays an important part in tracking down the precise information required. Whether it's through a chance meeting, a phone call or even a misspelt search term, those gold nuggets of vital information can make all the difference as Lorene Kennard's examples show.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'We have training, research skills and experience, but serendipity never hurts. Every time we take on a research project, we use our experience and training to determine which resources contain the information we are looking for. Sometimes, when we are searching for one type of information, we come across a gold mine of data that we were not even looking for but which can be useful in our current or ongoing projects.'

Mobile Technologies in Libraries
By Andrew Walsh
FUMSI: Use
With most library users owning a mobile phone, and increasing numbers of these being smartphones, it is time for libraries to take advantage of mobile technology. Andrew Walsh looks at the different levels that can be used from simple text messaging for both alerts and enquiries, to making sure the library is present on location-based social networks, and ultimately to creating an augmented reality layer.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'There are different levels at which libraries can enter the world of mobile friendly services, from basic text messaging services, through the mobile web that is increasing rapidly in importance and availability, to the more speculative (and fragmented) world of location aware services.'

CI Software: Surveying the blurry landscape
In addition to analysis of information industry news and in-depth reviews of content products, VIP publishes features written by experts on emerging trends and thorny problems in information strategy. September's VIP No. 82 featured an overview of software for competitive intelligence, a growing product category that often brings together aggregation of sources with data visualisation. VIP has also commissioned author Scott Brown to write VIP Reports on Products to cover the packages he mentions; this series is scheduled to begin in December 2010. Extract from Scott's feature story:
What is CI software? What are we talking about?
Here's where we begin to get lost in the somewhat blurry landscape of
CI tools and software.
If you have ever investigated 'CI software' for
your organisation, you may have had a hard time making sense of what's
available in this space. You may even be struggling with figuring out what
the software should do for you. In fact, what makes CI software 'CI software' anyway?
In some respects, it almost comes down to this: does the vendor market
the product as a competitive intelligence product? If so, then it is a
competitive intelligence product.
I believe part of the current confusion in this space is due
to a few factors. One is
the increasing number of information professionals moving into intelligence
work. Speaking from an info pro perspective, I believe that, because we are
steeped in a variety of information sources and tools, we see some so-called 'CI
tools' as duplicate, and often deficient, in their functionality. I've looked
at some CI software in the past, and have been hard-pressed to see why I
wouldn't simply use, for example, Google Reader as a better and more flexible
platform for gathering information feeds. This kind of 'seen that, have seen it
done better' mentality is certainly valuable. But I believe this mindset can
also hinder us from seeing these solutions clearly at times.
Another factor is the rise of social tools and social functionality
which has created new and evolving competitive tools. Some
social tools, like LinkedIn, are proving to be powerful CI tools all on their
own, and CI practitioners and researchers are using them effectively. The FUMSI Folio Report on Competitive Intelligence demonstrates this phenomenon in some depth.
As a
result, traditional software vendors are integrating social features into their
software. In October 2009, VIP published a
report on Digimind 7. Author Jonathan Gordon-Till talked about some of the capabilities of the
Digimind software that are infused with social aspects, such as visualisation and word
clouds. Collaboration - whether this means that organisation members are able
to submit information into the CI software, or that the software integrates
with wikis internally - is another social element popping up in CI software. We'll
increasingly see these kinds of features in CI software, and because social
tools are evolving, so will the CI software space.
The solutions
So where
from here? Digimind, reviewed in October 2009, certainly continues to garner a
lot of buzz. Some of the established solutions in CI software include:
- Comintelli's Knowledge XChanger
- Cipher Systems' Knowledge.Works
- Wincite Systems - focus on 'knowledge networking'.
Other solutions that have been gaining buzz lately include:
- Intelligence Plaza from Global Intelligence Alliance
- Axxone.Strategy
- Fuld's Competitive Intelligence Portal (specifically for SharePoint)
- Strategy Software - competitor information management system
- Astragy - offered as an SaaS platform
- Denodo.
Over the next few months we'll look at some of these
solutions in depth. We also may have the opportunity to look at some of the
many other solutions that fall into the CI software category - or somewhere
near it - including:
- QL2
- KB Crawl - website monitoring
- SuccessFactors CubeTree - a collaboration solution
We'd also like to get your input. Are there particular tools
you'd like to see reviewed? Are there areas in the CI software space that are
confounding? Submit your suggestions for reviews to the VIP Suggestion Box.
The full version of this article, including links to the above vendors, appeared in VIP No. 82, published in September 2010. Also published were reviews of CEIC: Brazil and EIU Country Risk Service. Purchase the individual product reviews by clicking the links, or save money by purchasing VIP No. 82 and get both reports as part of your purchase.

Resource of the Week - Structurae: International Database and Gallery of Structures
We apologize in advance for the time sink, but this gem -- discovered by Gary -- is one of the more compelling sites we've seen lately.
This site offers you information on works of structural engineering, architecture or construction through time, history and from around the world. Our documentation begins at the time of the pyramids in Egypt and Roman construction, continues to Romanesque and Gothic churches and through to the Industrial Revolution all the way to today and beyond. Structurae deals mostly with bridges, tunnels, dams, skyscrapers, stadiums, towers, etc. Explore this site to discover the marvelous works of structural engineering.
You can search this database -- a Google site search box is available -- but it's much more interesting to browse. Click on the Structures link at the top, and you'll be transported to a page that explains the different ways you can peruse the site, with the actual links down the lefthand side...
