Editorial
By Robin Neidorf
We recently hired another account manager -- welcome, Ann Marie! In preparing her training, we were surprised at the number of different information sources we're managing every day -- a full dozen before we'd even gotten to external information!
That's 12 different sources, just for internal information management and collaboration. Granted, not all of these are heavily used, but all are part of our working day. This core toolkit of sources combines free, fee and purpose-built tools, some cloud-based, some on our own servers, some on our individual hard-drives. The diversity is, I'd wager, common to many organisations.
FreePint Survey: News Needs and Preferences
We all rely on a variety of sources in a variety of formats. Consider for example the results of last year's research on News Needs and Preferences: We heard directly from information managers about the increasing importance of alternative sources of business news, including many no-cost resources, to serve enterprise needs for news content. We heard about demand for better federated search mechanisms, to enable organisations to aggregate and search once a wide range of sources.
For this year's FreePint Survey: News Needs and Preferences, we're revisiting many of these questions: Which sources matter and which have become less important? Which formats do you need, and which vendors provide them? Please take a few minutes to complete the survey anonymously. If you provide an email address (not associated with your answers), we'll send you a summary of the results upon publication in November 2010.
Also due for publication in November is the VIP Report: Comparative Review of News Sources (Factiva and Nexis.com). You are invited to preorder your copy at a 10% discount, along with the full FreePint Research Report: News Needs and Preferences. As a bonus, you'll also get access to the 2009 report editions immediately, at no additional cost.
ResourceBlog and DocuBase
Sources of all kinds are also the heart and soul of the ResourceBlog at ResourceShelf, where our contributing editors post hundreds of hand-picked suggestions every month. They focus on quality, web-based sources that support business research, and you're sure to find something to add to your personal toolkit every time you visit or subscribe to the free weekly ResourceShelf Newsletter.
If government reports are your kind of source, DocuTicker is the place to find them. The DocuBase offers citations from, and links to, full-text free PDF reports published by government agencies in the US, UK, and Europe (with a handful from other jurisdictions), as well as think tanks, NGOs, research institutes and other public interest organisations. Subscribe to the free weekly DocuTicker Newsletter to be kept informed of the latest additions.
If there's one word I hope describes FreePint, it's this: RESOURCEFUL. If you can't find what you need, I invite you to contact us directly for help. Every one of our sites features a Live Support chat button at the upper right, where you can get immediate assistance. Or contact any of our staff for personal assistance. Just maybe give Ann Marie another week to get used to her sources...
P.S. Is there a particular source of specialised information you need? Ask for help at the FUMSI Forum, where our users share tips and questions on how to Find, Use, Manage and Share Information.

My Favourite Tipples
Submit your list of up to five favourite tipples to support@freepint.com for publication with your byline and photo in the FreePint Newsletter. Have a single tip to share? Post it to the FUMSI Forum.
By Cindy Shamel
Information from the Internet comes in a multitude of formats. Finding it and analyzing it requires specialized tools. Here are a few of the resources I use to track down the good stuff.
- Addictomatic offers a kind of federated search for social media buzz. Results are formatted according to source, making it easy to select references from blogs, videos, Twitter, images, and news sources. The "Available Sources" tab lets you customize the results you will see.
- Omgili Graphs: Omgili forum search engine makes topics from communities, message boards, and discussion threads findable. The Omgili Graph function creates line graphs to make the topics visible. Enter as many as five search terms to see how the daily buzz for each term has changed over the last month.
- Blogpulse also creates graphs with trend lines, but the content comes solely from blogs. The site also includes buzz-tracking tools, blog stats, and profiles of specific blog authors. BlogPulse has the backing of Nielsen.
- Slidefinder: Using a simple search box interface SlideFinder enables the search for slides and presentations. Choose from 35 languages. Results are displayed in a thumbnail fashion showing the slide that contains the search terms. You then download the presentation from its host site.
- WebinarListings: Search for webinars on business, marketing, non-profits, social media, leadership, technology, and more. Anyone can list a webinar for free, but the website is funded by paid listings. Offerings include free and paid webinars. One upcoming webinar offers "Video Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead."
Cindy Shamel, founder of Shamel Information Services, serves companies large and small. She is known for delivering analysis and insights grounded in solid research strategies. Cindy currently chairs the AIIP Webinar Committee, is immediate past president of SLA San Diego and past president
of AIIP. She writes for Searcher and publishes a monthly newsletter of research tips called Information
Update. At least once a year she escapes to the High Sierras of central California for a week's hiking and backpacking.
Would you like to add your Favourite Tipples suggestions for the FreePint Newsletter or write an article for FUMSI (Find, Use, Manage or Share Information?).
If so, please submit them to support@freepint.com.

Treasuring Twitter: The Why and How of Preserving Tweets
By Marieke Guy
FUMSI: manage
Twitter started as method of exchanging 'inconsequential' information between individuals but is increasingly being seen as significant communication and marketing tool for organisations, so much so that they should be considering a preservation strategy for their tweets. Marieke Guy looks at why tweets should be preserved and what tools are available.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Tweets were initially seen as ephemera but they have since become useful in a way that was not anticipated. As Twitter's search limitations mean that you can only find tweets from the last 7-10 days, preservation needs to be considered for a number of reasons. These include: as a cultural snapshot; to support research; as a measure of impact; to retain an organisation's corporate memory; and as a record of an event.'

Transferring zeroes and ones - getting around file format issues
By Martin Belam
FUMSI: Share
It is the seemingly small problems that can irritate us the most and take up a disproportionate amount of time to fix, like not being able to open a file because you have the wrong version of the software, or not being able to send a large file by email because of size restrictions. So these tips from Martin Belam will help to calm those frustrations.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'There can nothing more frustrating than when you know, or at least you think you know, that you have the right software to open a file, only for it to resolutely fail to work. But there are tools to help such as OpenOffice and Google Docs. Another frustration is the restrictions sometimes placed on files sizes which can be sent by email. Again help is at hand with services like YouSendIt.'

Risk in new markets in VIP 82
By Nancy Davis Kho
Success in business involves taking risks: entering a new market, creating a new product, providing insight in a different way. Having the right information on which to base action mitigates risk, and also identifies where untapped potential might lie.
The products VIP reviews deliver that kind of information. This month's featured reviews put at your fingertips the kind of hard-to-find (and hard-to-analyse) information that can make the difference in business development.
Brazil is one of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China), which head the list of emerging markets businesses target for growth opportunities. CEIC: Brazil, from ISI Emerging Markets, offers up data on industries, companies, news and analysis. VIP reviewer Heidi Longaberger offers up her opinion of how the product performs.
From the venerable Economist Intelligence Unit comes Country Risk, a service monitoring financial risk conditions in 120 countries considered 'emerging' or 'highly indebted.' Penny Crossland's review highlights the strengths of the product for inclusion in your portfolio to identify opportunity and reduce the risk involved.
Let's not forget the risks right within our own organisations while we're at it: SourceWire, written by contributing writer Anne Jordan, provides insight on what resources may be added to or removed from your favourite aggregated platforms. If there's a source that's essential to the smooth functioning of your information services, let us know so that we can include it on the SourceWire monitoring list - send your suggestions and requests to anne.jordan@freepint.com.
The last 18 months have taught us all a thing or two about unmanaged risks. This year's FreePint Research Report: Economic Impact 2010 will be published shortly and provided to all VIP subscribers in your FreePint Master Account. In the meantime, a few key highlights are provided in this issue of VIP. Take a look at how information managers are turning critical challenges in content budget and staffing into opportunities to make their services more visible and valuable within their organisations.
It's another full month in VIP, particularly when you add in the additional features - an overview of products for competitive intelligence by Scott Brown, plus our usual Tap the Wire analysis of what's happening in the news. Small wonder subscribers sometimes tell us they have a hard time reading through all the good stuff in VIP each month!
Take a break from the reading and shift to contributing for a few minutes instead - the FreePint Survey: News Needs and Preferences is now open for participation at http://digbig.com/5bcjxg and you are invited to share your perspective on what matters to you in news products. Your responses are fully anonymous and will help provide context for November News Month, when we publish the VIP Report: Comparison of News Products (Factiva and Nexis.com), along with other news-related features and resources.
In the meantime, if you have suggestions for products we should review, features we should add or topics to cover, please let me know at nancy.daviskho@freepint.com, or share them via our suggestion box at http://www.vivavip.com/suggestionbox.html.

The six "Leading Papers" that comprise the publication (PDF) were selected by an advisory board, with sponsorship from AT&T, LexisNexis, Microsoft, and Procter & Gamble.
