FreePint Research Report: Buying Patterns - request your free copy
Six months into 2010, the information industry seems to be stabilising. The just-published FreePint Research Report: Buying Patterns indicates that budgets are more likely to be stable than they were 10 months ago, when we published the VIP Report: Economic Impact Research. In the earlier report, 57 percent of respondents reported declining budgets and 27 percent reported no change; in the current project, only 43 percent reported declines and 36 percent reported no change. If 'flat is the new up', then this looks encouraging.
However, respondents in FreePint Research Report: Buying Patterns are still facing close scrutiny with every purchase. We asked detailed questions about preferences for pay-per-use and free resources, as well as the kinds of challenges information managers face in making purchases. Request your free copy of the full report to learn more and compare our results to your own environment.
SLA Annual Conference Report
Ambivalent messages about the economy, budgets and buying pressures were also common themes at SLA's annual conference last week in New Orleans. Attendance may have been thinner than at last year's centennial celebration in Washington, D.C., but we came away with just as many ideas for product reviews, feature stories, reports and offerings as ever.
If you were at SLA 2010, please take a few minutes to share your thoughts for the FreePint SLA 2010 Special Report. Tell us about the most interesting session you attended, a new idea you want to try, or a great conversation. You'll get a free copy of the full report, providing you with a broader range of insight and experience, plus our editorial framework.
Couldn't make it this year? You can still contribute by telling us how you followed from afar - what blogs and Tweets did you find most helpful? Or simply register your interest in receiving the report, and we'll be sure to send it to you upon publication.
FreePint Family Resources
In addition to research results and special event reports, our usual portfolio of resources comes out every month. In addition to the FreePint Newsletter, you can get other free newsletters from across the FreePint Family:
- VIP Wires Weekly: Analysis from VIP contributing editors on what's happening in the information industry
- FUMSI Focus: Latest postings on how to Find, Use, Manage and Share Information, from our FUMSI contributing editors and members of our community
- ResourceShelf Newsletter: Guide to free, high-quality web-based resources for business research
- DocuTicker Newsletter: Guide to grey literature on the web
- Jinfo Update: Listings of the latest vacancies and events to support your job in information.
But that's just the beginning. Visit the FreePint Shop to find the latest VIP Reports on Products (in-depth reviews) and FUMSI Reports (expert-written guides on information topics) and more.

My Favourite Tipples
Submit your list of up to five favourite tipples to support@freepint.com for publication with your byline and photo in the FreePint Newsletter. Have a single tip to share? Post it to the FUMSI Forum.
By Angus Robertson
- The Economist
Along with The New Yorker, The Economist is the only
"premium" magazine I still receive in print form. I continue to be amazed at how much quality original
content is packed into each issue, and The Economist folks are always adding
more features and content to the online version in ways that integrate very
well with the print edition. I tend to use the online version for business and political
stories and the print version for the excellent arts and sciences coverage.
- NPR and BBC
I'm a huge public radio listener and both NPR and the BBC
have done a much better job of exploiting the web than most print-based
organizations. NPR.org is an essential
supplement to the over-the air broadcast, both for catching up on shows I have
missed and also for original content on topics such as music, books and finance
and to send links to items I like to friends and business associates.
The BBC World Service no longer broadcasts to the United
States, but the BBC website is a great way to keep up with politics, and sports
and arts news from my country of birth, as well as being an excellent source of
world news.
- The Daily Beast
Tina Brown knows how to edit. As a content curator focusing
on business and finance content, I especially appreciate The Daily Beast's intelligent
distillations of top news items across the spectrum of politics, business, arts
and sports that captures the zeitgeist.
- Executive Blogs and www.avc.com
There aren't many wealthy corporate executive bloggers who
aren't just tooting their own horn (or who even write their blog themselves)
but Ted Leonsis is one of the exceptions. OK, so I'm a Washington Capitals fan,
but Ted's Take also is thoughtful on technology, management, philanthropy,
documentary film and just life in general. And he doesn't waste words. I also enjoy Fred
Wilson's blog at AVC.com, not only for his views on venture capital and to
learn where technology is headed, but also for his personal reviews on products
such as the iPad and his thoughts on management and leadership.
Angus Robertson is an advisor to content businesses. He curates Research Recap (http://www.researchrecap.com), a professional blog highlighting the best financial research, and the Alacra Pulse blog (http://pulse.alacra.com), which highlights commentary from traditional and alternative analysts and executives. He is affiliated with Sabatier Consulting.

From Sumo to Samurai: getting your taxonomies fighting fit: Part 1
By Kate Simpson
FUMSI: Manage
Hierarchical taxonomies seem to dominate our lives because they are supported by most of the tools we use daily, from Windows Explorer to content management systems. But are they the best way of organising and finding our digital documents? In the first part of a two part series, Kate Simpson demonstrates the many benefits of using facets.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Hierarchical taxonomies and folder structures are not just used because that's what people know, but because the majority of tools we have to hand support them, and not facets. But where tools do support it, faceted classification is better.'

The social intranet fires-up knowledge sharing
By Toby Ward
FUMSI: Share
The Internet's poor cousin, the corporate intranet, has come of age because of the rise in the use of social media. With the introduction of Intranet 2.0 tools such as blogs, wikis, discussion forums etc, the humble intranet has become a powerful tool for employee collaboration and knowledge management.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Long the poorer, maligned cousin to the Internet, the corporate intranet has stagnated under limited budgets and the long held perception that customers and the corporate website are far more important investments. Thanks largely to the social media uprising, more collaborative vehicles such as blogs, wikis and social networking have jumped the firewall and have taken flight on the intranet.'

Warming up cold calls, managing copyright behaviour and understanding cultural differences in social media - all in VIP Magazine No. 78
In the monthly VIP magazine, specialists offer practical advice for business information professionals and VIP's team of contributing editors comment on what's happening in the industry.
VIP Insider feature this month...
Social networking services can be an absolute gold mine for researchers, giving you the vital background you need on your prospect to enable you to warm up your cold calls. But, as business researcher Ellen Naylor explains, they're not a panacea; sometimes they don't tell you enough about your prospects - perhaps because they deliberately keep their personal details scant - or don't give you enough prospects to make your results viable. So sometimes pre cold calling can be a real time saver and using social networks a waste of time - although you do need to understand your prospect's motivation if you're to make the call successful.
InScope this month includes...
Managing copyright is much more about managing behaviour than applying technological fixes, FreePint's survey on Copyright Policies and Practices concludes. But end users don't always see information managers as the corporate copyright specialists, even if they do have that formal role; there are opportunities here that information professionals need to seize.

From Tap the Wire: Industry News...
Seventy nine per cent of Fortune Global 100 companies are using at least one of the four platforms Twitter, Facebook, YouTube or corporate blogs, according to a recent report. But if they really want to reach clients in different local markets, they need to understand the cultural differences in the way social media platforms are used in different parts of the world.

And from Tap the Wire: Product News...
Big changes are signified at Salesforce.com following its agreement to acquire the crowd-sourced business contact database company Jigsaw. Not only will it make it easier for Salesforce.com's customers to locate information on individual contacts without having to enter it themselves, but it will also enable Salesforce to take advantage of the estimated $3 billion market for cloud-based data services.

Horizon - early warning for decision makers...
Horizon this month considers the implications of LinkedIn's withdrawal from market research, shows how knowledge workers' confidence in their awareness of copyright issues isn't always justified, and warns that the importance organisations attach to information management isn't always reflected in their practices.

Resource of the Week - Pathfinder for Government Statistics From GODORT
I have the sort of day job where someone is always asking for statistics - and the source must be highly credible. Which means a lot of time poking around in government websites. That is why I am always happy to find a good pathfinder put together by knowledgeable folks - such as this one from the America Library Association's Government Documents Round Table (GODORT).
This guide is simple but elegant. On the left side, you'll find a list of links to General Topics and Sites - which include "the usual suspects" like the Census Bureau's American FactFinder, Fedstats, and the Statistical Abstract of the United States. But there was also a link to one resource here that was completely new to me - this comprehensive Statistics and Demographics resource from the University of Texas Libraries.
