Whatever your tools and skills were for doing your job and acquiring resources 5 years ago, I'm willing to bet they've changed significantly. In fact, they may even have changed significantly in the past 12 months.
VIP's product reviews are just one way FreePint helps keep you informed about resources you should be aware of. In March, we produced in-depth reviews of Experian UK and InfoViewer, and April's reports will include a comparative review of sources of Russian data (a hot emerging market) as well as a review of Mergent. We're particularly excited about May's planned reviews, which include a comparison of LinkedIn, Jigsaw and ZoomInfo.
If you're not yet a VIP subscriber, this is a great time to start your annual subscription. Or take a 3-month trial to get global access at a special introductory price.
Not everyone needs an ongoing subscription, though, which is why we also make VIP Reports on Products available on a one-off basis. Simply visit the new FreePint Shop to browse the complete catalogue of premium resources, including:
FreePint research has demonstrated purchasers are increasingly using 'just in time' purchasing methods rather than 'just in case' subscriptions to manage their budgets more closely -- see for example last autumn's VIP Report: Economic Impact Research for analysis of how ad hoc purchases have increased in importance as budgets have tightened.
A just-launched research project picks up this theme and takes it to the next level: We invite you to participate in the FreePint Survey on Buying Patterns. This project, generously sponsored in part by Alacra, Elsevier, Hoover's and Leadership Directories, explores the shift to pay-per-use resources, as well as new pressures in budget management and decision-making.
Survey participants will receive a free copy of the resulting report; we'll be publishing the results in time for SLA's annual conference. Will you be attending? Be sure to complete our SLA RSVP form, so that we can keep you informed about when and where you can meet staff and contributors.
As you develop new skills and knowledge to meet today's new challenges, FreePint Family resources are also evolving to help. The FUMSI Forum fields questions about all aspects of information work. VIP LiveWire contributors analyse what's happening in the industry, providing you with more perspective on changes that may impact your world. Jinfo Events serves up a range of professional development and networking opportunities... and Jinfo Jobs may deliver your next colleague or your own next role. DocuTicker keeps you on top of PDF resources of value to researchers. ResourceShelf delivers a daily dose of search-related news and resources.
But we are always looking for more ways to be useful. How can we help? Share your ideas. Email any of the FreePint Team, or submit at our online suggestion box.

My Favourite Tipples
Submit your list of up to five favourite tipples to support@freepint.com for publication with your byline and photo in the FreePint Newsletter. Have a single tip to share? Post it to the FUMSI Forum.
By Susan Farrell
As a web professional I find it hard to search websites without being super-critical about them. It's an annoying habit both for me and those around me (akin to pointing out when apostrophes are missing from menus!), but there are some websites which have made their way onto my list of those that are good and useful.
- Jakob Nielsen is THE usability guru so his website is a must for web professionals. His Alertbox keeps us up-to-date with the latest news but, if you are looking for a bit of nostalgia, you can also use it to go back as far as 1995 and read about the issues of the time. It makes you realise how far the web has come.
- I've recently discovered a new group of superheros - The Webcredibles - who will 'save your website from a deathly user experience'! It is full of great, free advice on user research and user-centric design. The comic strips featuring Dr Webcredible and Webcrawler are a fun way of putting across some serious points.
- James Robertson's StepTwo website is another fount of knowledge, particularly for those managing intranets. It lists a range of resources available to help with various aspects of intranets and the blog (Column Two) is great for finding out about hot topics.
- The BBC's website is the standard that many web professionals aspire to...if only we had the same budget! It never ceases to amaze me how they manage to make it easy to find such a wealth of information. So, if I'm looking for the best way to do something, I will consult the BBC website and then hope I can replicate it using very little money.
- I need to be able to send large files to colleagues and clients quickly and I have found that mailbigfile.com is not only an easy URL to remember, it is also the location of a free, fast service for files up to 200Mb. You can also send larger files for a relatively small cost.
Susan is a web professional with a background in information science. Her career has spanned everything from abstracting and editing to website development and content management system implementations.
She spent the last few years as Head of Web and Portal Services at King's College London, and now she specialises in maximising the effectiveness of web presence. Susan gained a BSc in Biology from Durham University many years ago, and an MSc in Information Science from Sheffield University almost as long ago, and certainly long before the web was even dreamed about!

- [FreePint] Shift in use of the Bar
Hi -You've probably noticed the shift in how we're using the FreePint Bar. For the first time, we have a central address for sharing the latest resources, publications and information from across the FreePint Family of sites. The shift followed lengthy internal discussion about the volume of Bar postings as well as the overall focus of the FreePint site. As FreePint itself has become the 'umbrella' over the sites within the FreePint Family, the Bar now announces what those sites are publishing and invites you to interact on the sites themselves.FUMSI Forum: Q&A on how you are Finding, Using, Managing and Sharing Information at work.

Knowledge in the Round: Information Management in a 3-D World
By John O'Gorman
FUMSI: Manage
In a digital world, a single- or two-dimensional approach to information classification is increasingly out of step. Using the precepts of Q6 and Quantum Semantics, John O'Gorman describes a multi-dimensional approach that transforms flat metadata and keywords into rich information assets.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Fact: computers are stupid. Fast, but stupid. You would be fast, too if all you had to worry about were two dimensions.'

Presentation Tools: Beyond Powerpoint
By Martin Belam
FUMSI: Share
In an age where an ability to produce a compelling slide presentation can be a means of improving job stability or garnering attention for an underappreciated project or department, Powerpoint skills can be critical. But the Microsoft presentation software isn't the only game in town, as Martin Belam explains in this look at paid and free alternatives.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'You can upload images for your presentation from your computer, or do as Google suggests, and "try adding images from a website by dragging them onto the slide". It is a nifty bit of functionality - but it maybe ought to come with a warning about copyright theft!'

Opinions on creditworthiness and federated online publishing reviewed in VIP Magazine No. 76
Give credit where it's due is Perrin Kerravala's two-handled advice as she both acknowledges Experian's market leadership in the field of United Kingdom business credit reporting and assesses its effectiveness in helping users understand the likelihood of a business's future success or failure.
Reviewing Experian's business-to-business information platform, e-Series business, she rates it not only essential for financial services businesses conducting due diligence and risk assessment, but also invaluable for librarians doing research on UK private companies. Perrin likes its depth of detail and easy-to-use interface - but criticises its extremely limited exporting capabilities to other applications and the absence of automatic 'push' alerting.
Making sense of a plethora of federated information sources at low cost is the claim made for InfoDesk Inc's InfoViewer, which enables users to personalise, view, search, publish and export real-time information extracted from any electronic source to which they have access.
Subjecting these claims to detailed testing, Jonathan Gordon-Till finds that content filtered through InfoViewer can be delivered through a variety of publishing options including to Blackberrys. He's impressed by its multimedia capabilities and ability to create current awareness newsletters simply but effectively - but notes that users can't create or edit their own templates and that InfoDesk itself has to do the configuration of InfoViewer with source providers.
Purchase the individual product reviews via the links above, or save money by purchasing the entire VIP 76, including the above features and insights, executive summaries of the product reviews and copies of the full product reviews.
