 Editorial

By Robin Neidorf

Robin Neidorf Information people reliably provide the odd fact that puts everything in perspective. An old friend of mine recently shared the following titbit that offers an intriguing framework for nearly all my current projects:

Looking forward and backThe month of January was named for Janus, the Roman god of doorways. Janus is most often rendered in dual profile, looking both forward and backward. What better patron could there be for this month, which involves so much planning for new projects, and so much hindsight?

With a fresh year stretching before us, January always feels like the appropriate time to think about acquiring new skills and laying the foundation for the next tier of success. Perhaps our New Year's special offers will fit the bill for you to do so:

Take advantage of our '3 top-selling FUMSI reports for the price of 2' offer (Competitive Intelligence, Alternative Search Engines and Research Essentials), and you'll find that they'll support better research throughout the coming year.

Or consider another package now on offer -- a collection of 'library essential' reports from both FUMSI and VIP, giving you best value to support your content portfolio this year at a cost-conscious price.

But learning new skills doesn't have to be more complicated than visiting the FUMSI article database to find expert-written, practical tips on all kinds of information projects. The latest FUMSI Find article is an excellent example: Kathleen Rainwater provides a concise introduction to researching the automotive industry, complete with links to free and premium resources, a glossary of terms and helpful hints for getting the most mileage out of your auto research.

Reflecting on the past often leads to planning for changes in the future. The current Share article, by contributing editor Martin Belam, combines info pros' commentary on the latest trends in sharing information with a range of New Year's resolutions on incorporating better information practices in the coming months. Martin's colleagues make thoughtful suggestions; perhaps their resolve will stimulate your own.

It's tempting to keep focused solely on the year to come. After all, 2009 was a challenging year for many individuals and organisations alike. However, Janus reminds us to keep one eye on the past even as we look forward. FreePint's Online Information 2009 Special Report, scheduled for January publication, will help you do so. The report compiles commentary from delegates at December's exhibition, framed with our editorial commentary. If you haven't yet done so, please request your free copy now to receive it upon publication.

However you look back, face forward, or have crossed the threshold into the New Year, we appreciate your bringing FreePint Family resources with you.

With best wishes for all success in the coming months,

Robin Neidorf

Adrian Janes

By Adrian Janes

If you need free full-text reports from government agencies, NGOs and think tanks, DocuTicker is the place to look. Naturally, the librarians who curate the DocuTicker collection need to have a lot of great sites to hand, to help them find what you're looking for. DocuTicker contributing editor Adrian Janes shares a few of his favourites:

  • Delicious: A major social bookmarking site. As it is searchable and gathers together many resources that others have found worthwhile, it can be a way into a vast array of subjects with some assurance of quality.

  • European Information Association: Especially useful for its News Archive. This is regularly updated, with links to relevant documents such as press releases. You can see the latest stories (View All) or search in particular areas of interest (e.g. Economic, Education, Information Society, etc.)

  • Office for National Statistics Media Releases: Direct links to ONS publications of the previous 31 days. Alternatively, Find Releases allows searches by theme, keywords and/or date, with an archive back to 1998.

  • UK Government Web Archive: A selection of past pages from a huge array of British Government-related websites. Good not only for historical snapshots, as there are also links to the related live site if still running.

  • Whatis: The ICT world (and thus the world in general) is changing rapidly. This compendious 'IT encyclopedia and learning center' is valuable for concise and up to date definitions of acronyms, applications and innovations.

Adrian Janes is a reference librarian with the London Borough of Havering. He is also a Contributing Editor for DocuTicker and occasional contributor to ResourceShelf.

Like Woody Allen, his main regret in life is that he is not somebody else - for example, Woody Allen.

A new year could mean a freshened-up website, a new career or a chance to strike out on your own. All are topics of discussion at the FreePint Bar.

  • One Bar user is asking for opinions on pathways into a career in records management -- often in high demand based on review of vacancies listed in Jinfo. This fellow wonders how a non-information degree might be put to use in records management. Have ideas? Share them:
    http://www.freepint.com/go/b522526

  • Two Bar visitors are adding new features to websites and seeking recommendations on tools to add, including a time zone application and a calendar application. There are lots of great apps out there -- which ones do you recommend? Or if you need recommendations of your own, post your queries.

  • Perhaps 2009 was the year you found yourself on your own... or perhaps you've been thinking for some time about going independent. Marcy Phelps, FUMSI's contributing editor for the 'Find' practice area, shares a great Tipple -- the Association of Independent Information Professionals. Check out her comments at http://www.freepint.com/go/b523076 and consider sharing your own Tipples (see the Contributor Guidelines).

Trends for 2010: Information Sharing

Martin BelamBy Martin Belam
FUMSI: Share

As 2009 limps to a close, all eyes are on the road ahead - with a hope that it will prove smoother than where we've been in the past twelve months. Martin Belam shares his predictions and resolutions for those of us who 'Share' information for a living.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'One trend that I expect to continue in 2010 is the over-excitement about new social sharing technologies overshadowing the fact that the telephone and email are also both social media, and ways of facilitating the sharing of knowledge. Jason Mesut's New Year resolution is to 'Give myself a slot in my day when I actually read my emails'.

VIP issue 73Cloning Pipes, managing risk and monitoring deals in VIP Magazine No. 73

How much effort is it worth putting in to managing your incoming streams of information? Quite a lot, according to independent social networking specialist Scott Brown, as he introduces VIP readers to the complexities of Yahoo! Pipes. Learning how to build a Pipe from scratch could be complicated, Scott warns - but cloning from an existing one to suit your purposes can pay dividends, he suggests, as he demonstrates how to create a Pipe to aggregate and filter RSS feeds.

Risk management could scarcely be more vital in these economically turbulent times, and so Diana Nutting's review of Business Monitor International is timely. With data sourced from central banks, statistical agencies and - for the industry analyses - authoritative trade bodies, its comprehensive risk rating of countries, industries or companies is one of its most useful features, Diana concludes. Aiming for expertise in its chosen fields rather than comprehensiveness, she finds it relevant, timely and accessible to the non specialist - but there are issues with its search options, which aren't always as consistent as they could be.

Mergers & acquisitions, bankruptcy, venture capital and corporate restructurings all feature in The Deal Pipeline, reviewed this month by Penny Crossland. Aimed directly at senior executives, Pipeline users would typically work in law and restructuring firms, corporate or private equity houses, and for hedge funds, Penny suggests - and they'd be using it to find deal flow opportunities and to monitor peers and competitors. Her verdict: Its information is well presented and intuitive to use, although not all its tables are downloadable, there is a distinct United States bias at present, and individual and company profiles lack some basic data.

Purchase the individual product reviews via the links above, or save money by purchasing the entire VIP 73, including the above features and insights, executive summaries of the product reviews and copies of the full product reviews.
