Editorial
By Sara Waddington
SLA's annual conference is about to start... Why not register your interest in SLA's Centennial Celebration in Washington, D.C. in June 2009? FreePint will keep you informed with insider information on where and when to meet FreePint editorial staff and an invitation to FreePint events and receptions.
Don't forget that we have also now extended the VIP publishing programme with the introduction of stand-alone Reports on Products and Reports on Vendors. Readers can now purchase a quarterly subscription to VIP so that every month they receive VIP Magazine, featuring news analysis and highlights from our product reviews and VIP Reports on Products, featuring our in-depth review of premium content products (minimum of 2 per month).
The purpose of any knowledge organisation system should be to make it easy for people to find things, and so the more options and flexibility provided, the better. Folksonomies are fluid, responsive, and encourage personal expression, so for niche groups, customers, non-critical content and for fun, they have much to offer. However, folksonomies only work well under certain conditions, and not in all business contexts as Fran Alexander explains in her FUMSI article 'Folksonomies: Business Use'.
The official theme of this year's Computers in Libraries (CIL) conference was 'Creating Tomorrow: Spreading Ideas & Learning', but it is the concept of spreading ideas that CIL is all about. With three keynotes, 75 sessions, two days of Cyber Tours, a host of workshops, a busy exhibit hall, and the events related to Internet@Schools East, Computers in Libraries was a very full event. Jill Hurst-Wahl analyses the event in more detail in her FUMSI article 'Computers in Libraries 2009: Spreading Ideas'.
FUMSI subscribers can also now enjoy the latest FUMSI 'Folio on Adding Value'. This Folio includes six expert-written articles providing tips and techniques for adding value to information work products, framed with commentary from Tim Buckley Owen, FUMSI's Contributing Editor for the Use practice area.
We hope to see you at SLA!

FreePint Bar
By Sara Waddington
Recommendations for media monitoring and evaluation agencies, food producers' magazines, UK newspaper searches and conference reports are hot topics on the Bar at the moment. See a round-up of recent conversations below and click through to join the discussion. Post your research dilemmas to the FreePint Bar »
FreePint Bar
- One 'Pinter would appreciate recommendations for media monitoring and media evaluation agencies that have an international/global focus and include detailed coverage in the UK and US markets. He is specifically looking for media and blog monitoring, review/analysis and sector reports.
- Another 'Pinter, who is doing research for a food machinery company, requests help with finding food producers' magazines and websites.
- Can you offer a FreePinter your ideas on databases or mechanisms that allow searches on UK newspapers from the 1960s or 1970s?
- FreePint was proud to be a media partner for the Perfect Information Conference (PIC) in May. If you attended, or even if you couldn't make it, you can still get the benefit of delegates' experience by requesting your free copy of the FreePint PIC report. Simply complete the form and you'll receive your copy upon publication.

Folksonomies: Business Use
FUMSI: Manage
Folksonomies are gaining favour as a free content organisational system on sites like Flickr and del.icio.us, but that doesn't make them ready for business prime time. Fran Alexander explores the pros and cons of folksonomies in the workplace and provides some insight into balancing the costs and benefits of crowd-sourced tagging.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Appropriate rewards to encourage tagging will depend on the type of content and the corporate culture. If people feel that they are spending a lot of time tagging, but others are benefiting more than them, or that they are adding helpful tags and other people are adding self-promotional or silly tags, they may become disillusioned and the folksonomy will stagnate.'

Computers in Libraries 2009: Spreading Ideas
FUMSI: Share
This year's Computers in Libraries show focused on creating the future of libraries through spreading ideas and learning. As Jill Hurst-Wahl reports, the conference keynotes and sessions promoted just that goal, with valuable insights shared both inside the session rooms and spilling out into spirited discussions at 'lobbycon'.
WHAT'S INSIDE: 'During the interview, Boekesteijn and Holdengraber agree that maybe a librarian needs to become a live-brarian/life-brarian. In other words, librarians are available to provide information that is related to your life. Holdengraber noted our job is to get people to desire the books that are on the shelves in a library. We need to connect people to the books, events and conversations that are occurring in and through libraries.'
