I was made redundant ( company was trying to shed jobs, announced a move to other premises 100 miles away, told everyone who couldn't relocate that they were making themselves redundant) - that was when I was 58.
I could have waited until my pension came in at 60, but I had no pension from work, so wanted to go on working until 65, as I had planned to do in that job.
200 applications, 50 interviews, most of which I had to travel to at my own expense, plenty of "you are too well qualified", but I did get a temporary post with a ghastly conference company which treated their staff like dirt.
Eventually I was offered a proper job, in the field of information as I hoped, though the money is nowhere near what I should be earning, and I have a long commute. This organisation is heavily involved with older people, and is dedicated to equal opportunities, so there was, thank goodness, no discrimination barrier.
I can only suggest you research all organisations which are similarly dedicated, and make a point in your application of being one of those people they promise not to discriminate against. I don't suppose I need to remind you that you must research each organisation you apply to, so your application makes it obvious that you fully understand the employer and its ethos.
I am now involved in interviewing, and I am astonished at the number of people who don't bother to do their homework, and still expect to get taken seriousy.
A "formula" Curriculum Vitae really will not do. Applications must be carefully tailored to each vacancy.

I'm looking for a comprehensive list of UK universities, schools, colleges, NHS departments working in the field of child mental health. Is anyone aware if such a list/group of lists is online and being maintained already?
One small example I have found is:
http://www.psychnet-uk.com/universities/ukuniversities.htm
but ideally I am looking for something a lot more comprehensive that is updated on a regular basis.
Thanks
Martin

The organisation I'm working for wants to scan in several complete books and put them on a client intranet. I'm pretty sure this is not going to be possible - at least not without great expense and time in negotiating deals with publishers - but someone has an idea about an "ISBN licence" which give you some form of blanket copyright clearance like the CLA does.
Does anyone have any ideas about this? Also, if you know for sure that this does not exist that would be really helpful as well!
Thanks very much
Catriona

We are looking at establishing a non profit service to a community of researchers with a worldwide population in the region of 10,000 though the number of visitors might double its size. This community is operating under cost pressure (which research community is not?)
In the first instance we intend to set up the service with grant support but we plan that it should become self supporting within 2 or 3 years.
We understand that the three esablished ways of earning income are: advertising, subscriptions and transaction commission. we are looking at as many examples of existing sites as we can to get a feel for what other people are doing.
Any guidance on where to look for examples from which we can learn and any ideas on the levels of income that are likely to be generated will be very welcome.
We intend to use a low cost business model for the service. We have one or two people already who will be willing to help us achieve this. Again any ideas on where we can and where we should not economise will be very welcome.
Thank you in anticipation

Hello
Does anyone know of any recruitment agencies, or websites that for vacancies for short-term research contracts? I'm interested in researchers with an academic background, and various specialisms, who could could carry out literature reviews, interviews or focus groups, and could analyse and write up the results, on contracts of up to 6 months.
I'm familiar with the sites for information specialists, but where do freelance primary researchers look? Can anyone help?
Thanks
Juliet

Hi
Upgrade to the latest version of Skype (4.1 for Windows) and you can share your screen, in realtime, with a Skype contact.
When you initiate sharing, it starts a voice call, but you don't have to speak. The refresh rate is pretty good, but the compression does make the picture slightly 'lossy' (like a highly compress JPEG, a bit pixelated).
It's available in the Windows, Mac and Linux versions, and you can share cross-platform. To zoom in, right-click and choose 'View actual size', and try out the 'Full screen' button.
FAQs here: http://support.skype.com/en-gb/search/?q=screen+sharing
To upgrade, from the main Skype window choose 'Help > Check for updates'.
This is a great new feature, that I know we here at FreePint will find very useful.
