Abstract
What impact is MiFID II having on research managers and what financial and investment resources should you turn to now that the legislation is in force?
Item
Sam Luton has been exploring the financial and investment world for Jinfo recently, and his findings provide some interesting reading.
As 2017 progressed, it became clear that there was confusion and speculation amongst the investment research community. Who was bearing the cost of research and what would the impact be on pricing?
With the recent implementation of financial regulation MiFID II in January 2018, Sam looked at what the industry is currently like and how the new legislation will affect financial research in the future. It's important that information professionals working in the sector understand how this will affect them and the impact that MiFID II will have.
What is MiFID II and who will it affect?
For those of you who work in the financial services sector in the EU, you'll be aware of MiFID and its sibling MiFID II. But many of you outside the EU may not be up to date with what this means.
MiFID II is made up of EU financial regulator the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) and the Markets in Financial Instruments Regulation (MiFIR).
The MiFID is the framework of European Union (EU) legislation that regulates firms that provide "services linked to financial instruments such as shares, bonds, units in collective investment schemes and derivatives". MiFID II came into effect in January 2018, to "improve the functioning of financial markets in light of the financial crisis and to strengthen investor protection."
Sam Luton's article for Jinfo, "What's the likely impact of MiFID II on financial research?" is available to download if you have a Jinfo Subscription. It covers:

Building the mosaic - resources used inside buy-side funds to support the investment process
When it comes to investment funds, there are many different types of "buy-sides" (investment services and entities). Sam Luton's recent article for Jinfo looks at the "mosaic" effect (so called due to the process of building an investment case and buy-side fund; piecing it all together!)
The article "provides a whistle-stop tour through a range of resources commonly used by firms to help their analysts find the relevant pieces" and covers:
- "The basic toolkit", including corporate research, primary research and current awareness.
- Next steps: where to go from here.

Investment banking professionals: what's on offer
Jinfo has also produced a market landscape which looks at five expert networks - or primary research firms - for investment banking professionals.
As the author Sam Luton explains, their aim is to "...match industry experts with finance professionals wishing to learn more about those areas".
The "Market landscape - expert networks for investment banking professionals" is available to download (Subscription content). It covers:
- Services
- Pricing structure
- Compliance policy
