Abstract
For information professionals the time has never been better to make the move from the "librarian profile" to become an information engineer. In "The emerging role of the information engineer" Marc Vollenweider explains why.
Item
Savvy information professionals who are looking to get ahead "have recognised and embraced the strategic importance of information engineering", explains Marc Vollenweider of Evalueserve in his article "The emerging role of the information engineer".
Well, the time has never been better to join the ranks of those who have tracked the trends in data analytics and seen that the future includes a major role for information professionals who can adapt to become information engineers.
Marc sets out the reasons for the transition and compares the job profiles of information professionals and information engineers.
He highlights the skills that will put you in pole position to benefit from making the transition to an information engineer, making his article a good place to start your journey.
A warning shot
Firing a warning shot to those who may be complacent about change, Marc notes, "Given how quickly this space is changing, we can safely assume that the current set of information professionals will have to upgrade their skills or be replaced by millennials over the course of the coming decade."
I can hear you arguing that you can't find any focused training programmes, such as an MSc in Information Engineering. That's true, but Marc offers a solution to that for those who are feeling proactive.
If you're looking for job security you'll need to make some changes and, as I said earlier, the time has never been better to make a start.
