Abstract
The information centre of a biopharma company is a key stakeholder for any system or tool which will be used to store or share information in the organisation. Information centre staff should be closely involved with selection, development, rollout and ongoing governance of such systems. However, the relationship with IT and other departments may need special attention in order to ensure that the information centre is part of the process.
Item
I recently chatted with a friend who heads the information centre at a large pharmaceutical company about the large number of technology-based projects underway in her company.
With simultaneous projects to upgrade the document repository, implement an enterprise social networking platform and transform the intranet in which the library portal is embedded, her team can hardly keep up with the meetings for implementation planning, gathering user feedback and testing.
Partnering with IT
That's a nice problem to have; clearly her information centre is recognised as a key stakeholder, and the IT department is using a project management approach which ensures close, ongoing contact with system users.
However, many information centres are still working on developing their relationships with IT. If you are among them, you won't want to miss the upcoming FreePint Webinars which will address effective interaction between IT and Information Services. You can also view the recordings, should you miss the live session.
Usage Tracking and Governance
Working on requirements for implementing a new information system requires planning for collecting and analysing data on how scientists and researchers use the system.
A recent article summarising key learning points from FreePint's Topic Series "All About Usage" offers a good starting point. If you want to dig in further, check out the end-of-series report "Next Steps on Content Usage". Effective usage analysis is one of the keys to successful information governance.
