Item
We spend a ridiculous but necessary amount of time assessing and re-assessing the products available to us. As products become ever more sophisticated and complex, it is our role to ensure we fully understand where the value lies and whether they are actually worth it.
Ten years ago the value was in the actual information, today it is a different story. FreePint has a fantastic Topic Series "News, and Other Commodities" running until the end of December, which tackles this exact question.
Is News a Thing of the Past?
The news market has seen dramatic changes in the last ten years. With developments in social media and smartphones, is there a need for news sources? While most of FreePint's customers continue to use at least one source of news, our view of recent trends suggest this may not be the case for much longer.
If you're a Community level subscriber, you're eligible to attend FreePint's upcoming Communities of Practice session "The End of an Era for News Databases" in early December to discuss this subject. It will be an interesting discussion about these trends and how professionals in other organisations perceive these changes.
Is it Just Too Private?
We all know that getting private company information can be like a rollercoaster ride, you get that elusive turnover figure, only to discover it is an estimate from an unknown organisation. Do you trust the figure, or do you have to make a judgement call and carry on the search?
This is a problem constantly faced by information professionals in banking and finance. FreePint Research has just concluded a survey "Learning to Trust Private Company Information", which throws up some interesting results around this problem. The results are now being published and highlight that researchers need to know exactly where the information is coming from, in order to make an informed decision on its reliability.
