FreePint Topic Series: News, and Other CommoditiesOpus Global recently acquired Alacra. Opus is part of a partnership between GTCR and Doug Bergeron and GTCR has been behind several acquisitions in the information market recently, including Avention, Cision, Vocus and Gorkana. This is part of the growing trend for private equity firms to buy into the market, as recently highlighted by Andrew Lucas.

As part of our Topic Series "News, and Other Commodities" (register for free updates) we were keen to carry out a review of Alacra Premium (subscriber content) which covers 70,000 public and 350,000 private companies.

We asked Sophie Alexander, experienced business information researcher and product reviewer for FreePint, to carry out an in-depth review of this web-based platform.

Wealth of Company Information

Sophie found the platform's greatest strength to be its "provision of detailed company information" through information from providers such as D&B, Factiva, LexisNexis and Thomson Reuters.

Categories include:

  • Company profiles and financials
  • Deal information
  • Economic data and analysis
  • Executives
  • Market research
  • News
  • Credit and investment research.

Sophie commented that Alacra's easy-to-use interface would be ideal for novice searchers whilst more experienced searchers would appreciate its more complex searching capabilities.

Single Point of Access to Over 100 Sources

With more than 100 sources of premium business information databases, Sophie found the product to be a "cost-effective way to access premium business information as users are only downloading what they need and can avoid unnecessary subscription costs for databases they only use occasionally", making it ideal for ad-hoc research requests.

FreePint Subscribers can log in now to read our Product Review of Alacra Premium and find out more about its diverse range of content, including detailed company information and industry coverage, and a heads up on further enhancements expected in 2016 that'll make it even faster and easier to refine search results.
