Abstract

Factiva is Dow Jones' premium news aggregation service. Andrew Grave has just carried out an in-depth review and we ask him how Factiva can help you get the right information to the right people throughout your organisation with its sophisticated search criteria, news alerts, newsletter tools, visual filters and custom analytics.

FreePint Topic Series: News, and Other CommoditiesCarrying out a thorough search of premium global sources is a challenge in itself but fine-tuning the results, turning them into a user-friendly output such as a newsletter or chart and getting that information to the right person at the right time is an even greater one.

As part of our Topic Series "News, and Other Commodities" (register for free updates) we were keen to carry out a new review of Factiva, a key news product for many and ranked by the greatest number of respondents as their "preferred provider" for premium news content in our 2014 News Needs & Preferences Survey (2015 survey will be underway soon).

2014 was a great year for the Factiva platform. It launched its Query Genius search tool in beta, social media videos from Storyful, an author database and charting - amongst a wealth of other functionality.

Responsive to Customer Requests

We asked Andrew Grave to carry out an in-depth review of Factiva (subscriber content) as he provides training and support to corporate information teams through his company Research Counts, so was well placed to take an in-depth look at Factiva.

Andrew carried out our last review in 2014 and he was particularly pleased to see that Factiva had addressed many of the areas which he felt it could improve on and that it has made a genuine effort to react positively to its customers' requests.

He explains, "Getting the right information to the right person at the right time is crucial in terms of winning new business and reputation monitoring. Factiva's wide range of distribution methods encourage knowledge-sharing by making it quick and easy to achieve by means of its alerts, group alerts, newsletters, RSS feeds and intranet widgets."

One of the enhancements which Andrew found most interesting was the Factiva Expert Search which takes popular searches requested by customers and makes them available to its entire customer base by means of pre-programmed searches. Users can then use them to form the basis of their own searches.
