PatentAdvisor - Analysing and Predicting Patents
Jinfo Blog
2nd October 2015
Abstract
PatentAdvisor is a suite of US-focused patent intelligence and analytics tools produced by LexisNexis. With a focus on in-depth profiles of US patent filings, USPTO patent examiners and related content, it can be used to maximise patent filing approval efforts. We find out more from reviewer Robyn Smith.
Item
Intellectual property is becoming increasingly important to the success of corporations worldwide. Patent review negotiations, in particular, are costly and anything that helps to reduce these costs through faster patent approval times will benefit corporations.
One tool that can help with this is PatentAdvisor, a patent analytics tool produced by LexisNexis. This US-focused product, which provides in-depth profiles of US patent filing and USPTO patent examiners, was recently reviewed by Robyn Smith.
Data Mining and Analysis
PatentAdvisor's tools combine statistics, modelling and data mining to analyse patent applications in order to better predict how similar patent applications may develop, helping to make the process more efficient.
With over 25 years' experience as a librarian in the pharmaceuticals and medtech industries, and as a former chair of the Pharmaceuticals and Health Technologies Division of SLA, Robyn possesses valuable insight in this area. Robyn also reviewed LexisNexis TotalPatent and Minesoft PatBase earlier this year.
Primarily aimed at patent attorneys within law firms and IP-driven corporations, PatentAdvisor can also be used by information professionals tasked with providing this kind of data to internal patent departments or lawyers within a company.
Comprehensive Review
Read Robyn's comprehensive review of this web-based product, with its simple, clear interface and important search functions such as QuickPAIR and PatDoc Search.
Some of the tools highlighted in the review include:
- Prosecution Manager for searching
- Portfolio Manager to store and analyse content
- Private Data Management to view unpublished cases within a portfolio.
Key Strengths
Robyn was particularly impressed with the Examiner Profiles which she found to be one of the product's key strengths. She was also impressed by the Prosecution and Appeal statistics which, she says, provide "the most important analytic content within PatentAdvisor", as appeals can be expensive and time-consuming for applicants.
Other analytic functions highlighted in her report include Dashboard and Visual exploration, Alignment Reports and Prosecution Pattern Monitoring.
