At FreePint we've been turning our attentions to reference management and citation tools, as a result of suggestions from FreePint Subscribers and our customer advisory board.
We asked Cindy Romaine to conduct the reviews. Principal of Romainiacs Intelligent Research, Cindy's consultancy is focused on in-depth research for organisations from small start-ups to Fortune 100 companies. As well as over 15 years of corporate information research experience, Cindy was the 2011 president of the Special Libraries Association, representing 10,000 members across the world.
Reference Management for Academics and Corporates
The first of the collection of reviews Cindy tackled was that of EndNote, a Thomson Reuters product designed to help corporate and academic researchers better manage references.
She gave EndNote X7 a thorough test drive (subscriber content) and says, "Several times while working with the product, such as working with the PDF de-duplication function, I found myself thinking, 'they have thought of everything'."
Although the majority of the user base are in academia, significant proportions also come from government agencies, research institutions, pharmaceutical and corporate R&D, as well as a small percentage from the healthcare and clinical field. EndNote has 3 million users across all its offerings - which includes the free online reference manager as well as the more robust desktop solution which Cindy tested.
Evaluating the Price Against Capabilities
We asked Cindy how EndNote compares with the free offerings on the market and she was keen to highlight that, "When you are considering a reference manager, it is worthwhile understanding the difference between reference citation tools and reference management tools. There is a continuum of capabilities and being aware of that will help you evaluate and select the tool that best matches your needs. EndNote falls on the high end of the scale, as it is a mature product with many robust features."
FreePint Subscribers can log in now to view the Product Review of EndNote, read Cindy's in-depth consideration of the X7 version of EndNote and gain an informed understanding of the reference management tool and find out whether the price is worth the breadth of capabilities.
