Understanding copyright and how to best advise users and organisations is something many information professionals find a challenge. With this in mind we commissioned copyright expert Clare Painter to write for us regularly on a variety of copyright issues that are foxing FreePint Subscribers.
Tackling Copyright Concerns
Clare is a publishing consultant who specialises in practical copyright compliance and digital licensing, working with clients such as publishers, professional associations, companies and academic institutions.
Her most recent article "How Much Will it Cost to Use Someone Else's Copyright Content?" (subscriber content) is part of the Topic Series "All About Usage - From Content Sharing to Data Mining". The article explores when permission to use content such as images or text needs to be gained, how to find the rights holder, and how to encourage the rights holder to grant permission or a licence for reuse.
As Clare explains, "Sometimes the rights holder will simply feel it is not worth the administrative costs of processing a payment, so they will issue you with the permission you need, free of charge. However, if you expect that the rights holder won't ask you to pay for permission, don't confuse that with not needing to clear permission at all."
Technology is Creating New User Demands
Clare's article of December 2014, "Copyright and Issues of Redistribution in an Increasingly Connected World" also provides useful guidance, particularly around copyright audits and redistributing copyright material.
Meanwhile business research expert Chris Porter looks at changing user demands in his article "We Want To, But Can We? Usage Needs and Contractual Conditions", where he interviews Acquire Media, Avention and Elsevier to find out how they are tackling the evolving field of licensing and permissions. Their approach to tackling one-off or unusual usage requests is also covered.
