Abstract

My Favourite Tipples are shared by Kate Stanfield, head of knowledge management for a commercial law firm. She shares her favourite online resources in areas from technical forums for intranets, to legal coverage and language learning.

My role as head of knowledge management for CMS Cameron McKenna and a recent VP role with the professional services company Integreon, mean that my interests are fairly broad, covering the best approach to information and library services as well as knowledge management and the effective capture and dissemination of experience, knowledge and learning across the organisation. CMS provides clients with specialist, business-focused advice in law and tax matters.

  • Knoco: Knoco is my first port of call when looking at knowledge management (KM). It has a wealth of practical experience and advice, and an ethos that makes sense to me. Knoco was originally set up by key members of BP's global knowledge management consulting team, and has practical guidance, thought-provoking insights, white papers, guides and articles - there is a lot of great information on this site.
  • Microsoft TechNet: We have just launched a new SharePoint knowledge system and intranet so my team sometimes has to find out how to do things that we cannot work out ourselves. This comments-based technical forum is great for finding answers to obscure questions that have been asked by somebody else, and answered by various technical gurus. Everything from custom JavaScript, to how to get an RSS feed to work, this site usually has the answer somewhere.
  • Phil Bradley's weblog: Described as "where librarians and the internet meet", Phil always has interesting and useful information about everything that makes the internet more useful, such as decent searching, social media and search engines. With a hint of Dave Gorman amongst the information that is useful for work and research, Phil finds some very unusual sites as well as providing sound discussion of best practice.
  • The Legal Support Network: This can provide some interesting snippets both with general legal coverage, insights from other legal businesses and markets as well as a view on knowledge management with blogs, newsletters, the "Briefing" magazine, podcasts and more.
  • Duolingo: This is a social media site helping you to learn a new language or brush up existing skills with an online community. Sign up for free and pick from a plethora of languages. Tasks allow you to track your progress pick up points and awards; you can start as a complete novice or skip through to intermediate or advanced tasks.

An article on FreePint I found particularly interesting:

  • I regularly have to create PowerPoint presentations and have to give talks every now and again. I found Phil Bradley's "Create Engaging and Memorable Presentations by Going Beyond PowerPoint" really helpful, because it was so practical. Death by PowerPoint is an easy trap to fall into, and Phil's exploration of what is available is thought provoking. I have used Prezi and have used other freeware to make some videos introducing new systems, but Phil as usual had found more sites and useful information – that I will definitely be using.
