Abstract

The opportunity to keep on top of product launches and industry trends, and to read written commentary and analysis of industry developments, is essential to help interpret and identify the impact changes will have on your industry. Communities of Practice offer another level of knowledge through frank discussions with peers and industry experts, often resulting in information gains it would otherwise be impossible to attain. Find out how a FreePint Subscription can help develop your strategy.

Just when you think you've got a handle on a market sector, big change comes along. Such was the case with the recent announcement that Lex Fenwick, principally credited with the design and strategy for DJX, has left Dow Jones.

Discussion lists and online groups were abuzz with the news for days.

I added my commentary to the mix: yes, there will undoubtedly be additional changes to Factiva and the proposed DJX. However, given the degree of upheaval created over the past year in the news sector, I question the sanity of any information manager who abandons efforts to dig into today's (and tomorrow's) real organisational needs for news content.

"For years we've essentially outsourced the provision of news content to a single provider," said one participant in a recent FreePint Community of Practice (CoP) session on creating a news delivery strategy. "They changed their business, and we got stung."

More CoP Opportunities

This week offered an additional in-person FreePint CoP in New York City, on the same topic - helping information managers develop a risk-managed portfolio of news delivery for awareness and research. Three more in-person CoPs are scheduled: two in the Chicago area, and one in Minneapolis (in partnership with SLA-Minnesota).
